2017 Camaro ZL1 - 10 Speed Automatic

It looks like the new Camaro ZL1 will come with either a 6 speed manual or a 10 speed automatic transmission. I was hoping for enough horsepower and torque to run with a Dodge Hellcat, but GM still thinks that the Corvette needs to have the most power (something they need to get over). 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Revealed! Packs 640 Supercharged Horsepower!

they might not have the raw power numbers of their Italian owned adversaries, but i guarantee you that a ZL1 will stomp all over a Hellcat on any road course or twisty mountain road in the world..

And, get this, the 10 speed automatic was co-developed with Ford for use in their SVT Raptor. GM plans to use it also in future trucks. The 640 hp is basically the same LT4 used in Corvette Z06's with differences in intake and exhaust for maybe 10 hp less but probably mainly a rating thing to keep the Vette top dog in the hp dept. With much less weight to haul than the Hellcat the ZL1 probably won't be too far off in acceleration but on a road course no contest. Camaro will run off and hide.

I drove a 2012 ZL1 w/4,404 miles 2 weeks ago...what a fun ride.
I can only imagine what a 2017 is like.

How long will it be before they go to AWD to get all that power to the ground. It would be an experience second to none launching with 640+ hp. You can build a 15 speed transmission and if you can`t get it hooked up, you are losing. Slicks for the street are NOT an option. If you don`t believe me, try a set in the rain. SCARY!!

Re: 2017 Camaro ZL1 - 10 Speed Automatic

the Hellcat was not designed to be a road course car; it's just a straight line car to fun with on the weekends. The Viper was the one if you wanted to make turns and for the price they are asking for the Hellcat its quite doable. I almost bought a Hellcat and test drove a Purple one, and the two key fobs are kind of cool (yellow makes 476, red make full power 707) not including the 15k markup making the Hellcat @89k. After driving one I decided it was better to go with two purple Chargers instead; an R/T for me, and a Ralleye for the wife. Even the mags don't compare the two, just Camaro VS Mustang.

'67 Elky Global West suspension kit with coil over QA1's, 435hp Edy Crate,700R4, Currie +9 3:75, Disc brakes front and rear, Dakota Digital gauge package, 12 Circuit Painless wiring kit, Ididit tilt Colum, etc.
2012 HD Tri-Glide in Vivid Black.
1967 XR7 Cougar S code 390.
2016 Charger R/T in Purple.

That's what Nissan did with the GT-R. They are significantly quicker than the Hellcat, in stock form older models will run 11-teens, 2014's recieved a bit of a tweak and run well into the 10's.

Most Hellcat drivers can't figure out how to launch with stock tires, and do well to break 11.50.

The 2016 with the 8 speed is no sloutch at 455 hp.Throttle response from the direct injection is amazing and the tuned exhaust sounds wicked when your into it pedal wise, much much better car than the previous generation doesn't feel big and bulky.

They had the first Wednesday night drag race of the year. One of the regulars brought out a new GTR instead of his race car. He ran 11.20's, but hasn't figured out the best way to build boost at the starting line. He's racing the car rather than doing time hits, so he actually needs to try and cut a good light, which compounds the problem. After he lost his son-in-law ran the car, he's owned a couple and is pretty well dialed in when it comes to staging, he ran 10.60.
