damn, must be getting old, injuries

So back in late June I burned the bottom of my left foot on some hot concrete around my pool... I was emptying the skimmer and making adjustments in my bare feet, and while I felt it was hot I didn't realize how hot... Ended up with blisters on 4 toes and the ball of my foot...

Finally all healed up ( a little scabbing left), But then had another injury with the right foot...

All this week starting Monday, I was feeling a little "fluish", tired and lethargic, going to bed at 9 pm (usually 11-12)... On Wednesday I noticed my right foot was swollen and red, mainly the big toe. So i called my doctor. Video visit on Thursday, and by then we noticed a "blister" on the bottom of the big toe... In-person visit yesterday morning, and my doctor had x-rays taken and set an appointment with a podiatrist... Get to the podiatrist at 3:30, and she shows the x-rays. Definitely something inside... She cuts it open with an exacto knife, and cleans out the wound... With no anesthesia... I really had no pain, just mild discomfort... She was worried because there were some red patches on my foot and ankle, and they wanted to ensure no infection in my blood... So she send me over to the ER in the hospital next door...

I turned out to be a sliver of metal (probably a drill shaving from work on the Chevelle)... About 1/8" long, 1/16" wide...

Funny, because the entry to the office is the same driveway as the entrance to the hospital, but the ER is on the other side of the building. They wheeled me out to the driveway, made my wife pick me up and drive me around to the ER, where someone else came out with another wheel chair to cart me inside.. I guess its a liability thing where they could have a volunteer or orderly push me around or through the building.

get in the ER, wait an hour for a blood draw and IV setup and another X-ray. Then waited another hour before they moved me into a room with comfy recliners for the IV session... Took 3 hours for two IV treatments with two different antibiotics... Finally released to go home at 10:30 (no blood infection)... Wife and kids came to pick me up...

Feeling fine, no pain or discomfort, but supposed to stay off the foot... That's REALLY difficult when it doesn't hurt...

The main issue is Type 2 diabetes, and some neuropathy, which has desensitized my feet somewhat. Ironic that when the doctor wiped my foot with cleaner, I couldn't keep still because it tickled... But slicing in, nothing...

Yeah, I do wear shoes and socks usually when working on the car, but I often do walk barefoot outside, maybe to take garbage out, etc... My wife has left slip-on sandals for me at the back and side doors... I guess I'll have to start using them more often... And I'll need to perform a thorough cleanup in the shed, garage and outside.

Kind of bummed, because I can't work on the car for a while... Too difficult to bend down without putting pressure on the foot and big toe... But it obviously could have been must worse...

Hopefully this wont require you going to a "wound Clinic" or Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber...Type 2 DM is a tough situation. Best thing to do is try your best to control your blood sugars and elevate feet and let them heal.

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

I understand your Dilemma , my late wife had Diabetes real bad since she was around 12 , on insulin most of those years , had to be very careful with her feet . Glad you are doing as You were prescribed as I know how hard it is . I went to my Chiropractor Thursday after work and got a good adjustment as I had thrown my back out . Told my Doc I would see hi, in a week. Got home and swept up in my shop where I had removed the front cross member from my 70 C10. I missed a small threaded rod and stepped on that and my feet started out from under me , but I caught myself and pulled my back out even worse . Went back Friday after work for another adjustment and have stayed out of my shop so far , Man its hard , I got stuff to do.

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

Tony
I have had Type 2 Diabetes since age 40 and have been on Insulin for about 13 years/55 age
I am 68 years old now and have no problems with my Feet except the Bottoms are very sensitive
and I have to wear Cushioned Insoles in my Shoes so I can walk around in normal comfort
no bare feet any more except in the Shower

The last time I was to a Diabetes Specialist he was surprised I was a Diabetic based on his Examination of my Feet etc.

Have a New Diabetic Doctor now and have dropped the amount of Insulin I need in 1/2
and lost Weight because of the reduction in the amount of Insulin I need to take
and A New Pill PLUS a Once a Week additional Injection I also take

With the new Reader Machine and Sensors I am able to better monitor my Blood Sugar Levels
and no more Pricking my Finger Tips for the Old Blood Machine

The added Sugar in our Blood does desensitize our Feet/Fingers over time

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

Tony. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET! Mrs. Ghaasl is a type 1 diabetic, had been since she was 8. Feet need to be taken care of. One of my uncles was a type 2, got a minor scrape on his foot, and had to have it amputated. At the time of his death, both of his legs had been amputated just below the knee. Mind you, he had never taken good care of himself. Wear your slip on sandals, stay off of your feet until the doc clears you. I watched my uncle lose his will to live after his first amputation. It was really sad. Don’t do that to your family.

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

Tony,

Hang in there, man. Take it easy for awhile...it's too hot to work outside anyway, so now is a good time to heal up.

Stories like this are why I never walk around in bare feet. Not even in the house. Buy yourself a pair of flip flops for around the house/yard. Literally zero effort to get them on/off...will prevent another situation like you're going through now.

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

Take care of yourself. I'm 49 and ripped both of my biceps off my shoulder (the small arm I think) rotating 20" tires on my Tahoe. My doctor said I shouldn't lift anything with a bent arm and I was really too old to get it fixed. Using a screwdriver sucked for a while but it seems like everything is fine now. Getting old is a bummer.

Got Chevelles?

Re: damn, must be getting old, injuries

To keep the neuropathy to a minimum stay away from sugars, booze and too much carbs.
At 52 I have next no feeling in my feet at all, its not fun. Or other times extreme pain. Once the damage gets to a point there is no undoing it.

As others said you gotta cover your feet, one infection and you may lose them....make sure and use good arch support as we get older, those arches drop & you get plantar fasciitis youll be sorry. Ha it do bad for 3 yrs I had to live in a wheelchair even standing up was too painful.
Helped me drop over 40 lbs though.

Good quality shoes, even inserts in your slippers are a must. Gettin old aint for sissies.

Those Dr. Scholls inserts that you can get after stepping on the machine in Wallymart are worth EVERY penny

if you spend a lot of time on your feet.
