don't need it but gotta buy it right?

buddy decided to get a new crate small block engine for his car. Car has a running 396 (350 hp CE motor) basically stock with a cam swap. Says its got a bit of blow by when beating on it. I was just joking when I asked what be was going to do with it if he bought a new motor, He said 500 bucks and its yours! I know alot of folks don't think a 396 is worth much. But a running big block that I can just drop into a car is worth it to me. Now I just have to wait and see if be does get a new motor this summer. I really need to find more room! jim

350hp 396 has 10.25 to 1 compression. turbo probably wouldn't work too well on it. jim

A 396 might not have much value, but the CE stamp does. I'd say $500 is a good deal on a running BB.

The CE block is worth a few hundred easy, and the crank is worth a couple. Those 063 heads respond very well to just a little bit of work. The L34 autos came with the 499 distributor, which alone is worth twice what you paid.

no carb or dist. its got a msd setup on it anyway. basically I should be able to drop my dist, and carb on the motor, swap the flywheel and starter from the 350, get a short waterpump and pulleys and its ready to drive in the 66. Its not one of those motors thats been parked under a workbench for the last 10 years. Its running in a car. so we know everything works.
a buddy had a 396 shortblock awhile ago, it looked good, had the L2242 pistons, supposed to have new rings, bearings but it sat in his dusty shop for so long it probably needed to be taken apart and cleaned. Just couldn't buy it because who knew what we would find inside. jim

Re: don't need it but gotta buy it right?

I wonder what the real compression ratio is, considering factory tolerances. I know mopar big blocks were WAY less than advertised in that time period. Like, rated 10:1 and actually 8.75:1...

If I was closer and no ROM, I would jump on it.
