2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

I have an ‘09 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with 154k. Always changed oil and filter every 4K miles, used Motul 5w-30 and Wix Gold filters. Engine upon tear down was spotless, no sludge or carbon anywhere. The thing always used oil and it was too much of a pain in the as to go through the oil consumption tests, so I alway just changed the oil every 4K instead of the recommended 6k. I’ve had to clean out the oil pressure sensor filter about once every 6-7 months and a couple weeks ago, I was driving the truck and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Pulled over and had a dead miss, scanned it and engine misfire on #4. Well, ****.

Towed the truck home, coil pack and plug test we’re fine. Did a compression test and #4 had 0 psi, pulled the valve cover and #4 intake lifter was collapsed. Bought an extended warranty when I got the truck and luckily I kept all of my receipts for maintenance and kept a log. ( I always do my own maintenance)

Had it towed to the dealer and after tear down, lifter was collapsed and had rotated in the lifter tray and wiped out a cam lobe. Getting a new GM replacement engine installed by the dealer and will be purchasing a AFM delete chip.

AFM and LS lifter design is garbage.

Frustrating but you're getting a new engine sucks being without your truck though

Yeah new engine is a good thing. My wife didn’t think buying an extended warranty for 5k was a good idea when we bought the truck. I told her, if this engine blows or this 6 speed transmission goes, 5k is nothing. We are buying it and I’m glad I stood my ground.

🙄 seen the same thing on the pile of Hemi and FOMOCO trash too. I’d say you did pretty good considering the other makes we’ve seen with a lot less miles then that. Sorry to hear about your issues though, the new engine will be nice.

The Hemis are having ten times as many failures as the Gm's are. I personally have not seen or heard of too many of the Gm ones local to me. I have 4 Hemi's in the shop right now

Any bad news about the Tundras? If I ever need to buy a new pickup, it will be a Toyota.

Re: 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

I’ve had problems with both of my LS engines. This in the 5.3 and the 4.8 in my work truck. In the work truck a chunk of crap went through the oil pump and put a little burr on the bypass valve and it got stuck open. I only found it after pulling the pan to check all of the o-rings, then finally just pulling the pump to see what was going on.

Replacing an oil pump on an LS in a box van, sucks.

From what I’ve read Toyota is having some transmission problems in the tundra and Tacoma’s from 2017- current

My 2011 5.3 GMC Sierra with 176k dropped #6 intake DOD/AFM lifter 2 weeks ago. Cam wasn't damaged but still had a $2700.00 repair bill. Ouch. After the repair, oil pressure is better.

The dealer that is doing my repair and who I bought the truck from told me they see probably 1 a month of 2008-20012 trucks that come in for lifter replacement/ collapsed lifter problems.

Re: 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

The older 1999-2004ish LS / LM7 5.3 liter truck engines are nearly bulletproof. No AFM, no DOD, no VVT and with reasonable care, these engines often go 250,000 or more miles. My 153,000 mile, 1999 GMC LM7 engine in my EC purred like a kitten today on a 140 mile round trip to the Kilgore, TX Lone Star Lug Nuts Car Show. Great compression the last time I checked it and a cruise oil pressure of 45 PSI. Probably 27 miles to the gallon today out of it with 2.73 gears in the diff.

If for some odd reason it failed on me, I'd have a tough time justifying anything but rebuilding this one or getting another good one from the junk yard. However, a 2013 LS3 with no AFM or DOD would be very tempting. That same engine in my SS Camaro is a blast to drive.

I’m buying one of the AFM delete chips from summit. I think it’s a really stupid system and I’ll sacrifice a little fuel mileage to not have this happen again. Mine never switched from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders and back smoothly, it always bugged me.

Re: 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

Lost a lifter in my 125k 07 Yukon also. Pulled heads, replaced cam, lifters, timing set, valve seals and water pump. Big job for sure. Went with non-afm cam and lifters and sent the computer to a guy who eliminated the afm programming. Cost me 1000.00 when all said and done but runs perfect and oil consumption has been significantly reduced.

It’s a neat system on paper but has its issues in the real world. If I had an afm engine I would definitely have that feature deprogrammed to avoid issues. That 1 mpg just isn’t worth it.

Re: 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

I also had a 2009 gmc 5.3. The dealer took the engine out 3 times under warranty. GM refused to replace it. What an aggravation. I now own a Ford. They have their own smaller issues but overall I think it is a superior truck. One bonus is that the aluminum body won't rust and that 3.5 ecoboost has it all over the 5.3 V8.

Re: 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 LS AFM is garbage and a terrible design

First off the Truck is 10 years old and paying $ 5,000 for a Extended Warranty is to much in my books

That being said I bought a OD Auto V6 3.0 Ford Ranger Edge Pickup with the Extended Cab in 2005 as a Daily Driver
30 Miles to the Gal on the Hwy and I use it to Haul Stuff for Family / Friends etc.
plus it takes the Track Tires & Stuff for the 67 for when I go Racing
Only Gas / Oil / Tires / one TuneUp after 10 years / 173,000 Km on it now

So in another 5 years at age 74 I will buy my last Vehicle which will likely be a Nissan Frontier with out a Extended Warranty
