mini blower?

anyone run the small roots blower? going to check onerous this morning. I think it's a 142 weiand, it's not installed, missing a pulley and belt. Figure as long as it spins fine, the teflon isn't chewed up and the price is good I'm going to get it.
anything else to look at on these things? Only small block I have is in the 66, so it should be a cool add on this summer. I already have a beat up hood to cut a hole in, also have a bolt on fiberglass hood with a teardrop scoop (Ford style). jim

Re: mini blower?

Although I've never ran a baby blower on the street, I had a jet boat with a GM truck crate 350 that wouldn't cut it at altitude (~4500' high lake). Lots wrong with the application (Panther jet and a heavy for a jet boat 21' small cuddy) but I picked up a 142 for a great deal and figured what ta heck, I wanted to put a BBC in it anyway so if it blew up I was okay with it. Slapped it on the stock 350 and what a difference. Went from not being able to get on plane to a fun 60 foot rooster-tail toy. Ran it that way all summer without issue but always worried about the unprepared 350 under it. Of course I pulled some timing, kept RPM in check, and with the high altitude lake as radiator I ran it really cool. Never even put a boost gauge on it so no idea what boost it was capable of.

If I was running one on the street and was expecting longevity (even though the 142 shouldn't make much boost) I would still want good pistons, slightly more open ring gaps, and a good cooling system.... Could you get by on a totally stock bottom end? Probably could, likely been done many times... In any case: Boost equals fun but can and often does also equal expense....

Re: mini blower?

Probably work OK on a small block. Do you have a good cooling system? Even with a small blower it can make things hot. I presume you would have a blower friendly cam too in motor. Headers and good exhaust to help with breathing. The good thing with a small block you got some room in the front for the pulley stuff. Can rest of driveline handle another 100 foot pounds or so of TQ?

Re: mini blower?

guy was suppose to call this morning early and meet at 10, I get a message at 1030, sorry felt sick, can we meet now. he has my number, can't pick up the phone or text. I basically said maybe we can meet later this week.
the drive train is a M20 and a 3.55 12 bolt posi, rebuilt posi, moser axles. big aluminum radiator.
I guess these were sold as a bolt on 100hp on a stock 350, I need a top pulley, so I'll make sure I get a bigger one vs smaller. I'll check the chart. thats if I end up with the blower. when I have cash in hand, there were im suplose to be and the seller doesn't at least let me know he'll be late, I put my money back into my pocket and look for another deal. jim

I have one on a 350 in a 65 Chevy C10 with an M20 Muncie. The vehicle is pretty heavy, but is a real blast to drive. You get some blower whine as you rev it up so makes it pretty cool. It does really pull well as said earlier.

Re: mini blower?

did you use a holley carb. did you do the boost reference modification to get the vacuum changed for the power valve? jim

Yes, we did the boost modification on the Holley. They sell blower carbs that don't have that problem.

Re: mini blower?

I was going to drill the power valve port on my 750 if we go that route

Re: mini blower?

i been tuning these for many years. the torque will put a grin on your face that is permanent. i dont see an advantage in boost referenced power valves. to me the physics dont add up. belts should be easy to get. top pulley should basicly be determined by your compression ratio, cam size and max rpm. once you drive one you will never want to go back.

Re: mini blower?

ive never run an edelbrock. holleys tend to run rich and thats what these little monsters crave. fuel and timing. i would think an edelbrock needs work to richen things up to where they need to be. i would guess they may not have enough squirter for a blower.
