Lights for On Ramp Entrance

Just seen on the news they're putting red/green lights at the end of on ramps to get on the local I-275, wonder how many people will obey the lights? is this more of people not knowing how to drive or merge into oncoming traffic?

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

We have them here in CA. It meters the flow of traffic onto the freeway and helps keep the freeway moving. It meters the flow rate and puts space between each car so a big gaggle of oncoming cars doesn't come on all at once.

Highway patrol hides out and tickets those that run the redlight so most people do obey them.

We even have them on many freeway to freeway ramps.

They're here in Arlington VA as well. As stated, it's to help meter inflow --- because most people are such bastards that they have to be first!

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

The first few weeks will be a PITA with big back ups. Once people figure it out it runs very smooth. Some are set up for car pools in a second lane where you don't stop at all.
All in all it works pretty good especially for the slow lane freeway traffic. They can adjust their speed to match the spacing rather than coming to a stop when a group of cars try to merge on. Which is the whole idea.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

Some cars are so slow (I have owned a few of them) that trying to merge with freeway traffic from a standing start at the end of an on-ramp would be terrifying for sure. I hope that the cops will not write tickets for the drivers that get rear-ended in this situation.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

We've had these metered entrance ramps for decades here in NYC. They only work when traffic on the highway is congested.

I don't know if they help any and I've never seen a cop watching them so I doubt it's a money grabbing scheme. We all know after like ten seconds, it gives a green for one car so we kinda roll up to it without stopping just as it goes green.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

Merging seems to be a lost art in my state. It never fails, traffic will be clipping along at 70-75, and some idiot will attempt to merge at 45mph, and then get bent out of shape when traffic is suddenly on his/her bumper.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

We have them everywhere in Nor Cal. Iím used to them now and they really do keep the freeways flowing better by turning the on ramps into parking lots.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

They tried them here years ago at some of Omaha's worst traffic spots. Backed up traffic well into town and multiple previous stop lights. On top of poor drivers not taking their turn when they are greenlighted or being too timid about it and the traffic backups, they were an utter failure. They deactivated them within a year.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

No new news here in PA. we already have them. some places have 2 lanes controlled alternatively by a light. All it really does is space out the cars on the on ramp merging into traffic. Most people can handle this by themselves, but we live in a different society these days.

I dont believe the lights are active all the time, just at high traffic times in the AM and PM.

Re: Lights for On Ramp Entrance

I think it's just going to make things worse around here, I was at a red light a few days ago and guy in fast lane was sitting all by his lonesome playing his phone at a green light, not a youngster either
