Filed claim against State Farm . . . .

I was tagged from behind, recently, while beginning to move forward, on green, after a red light. It will probably be, just a rear fascia replacement on the 2017 Accord. Dropped of my vehicle yesterday, and now driving a 1500 Dodge Ram, Hemi, rental. I've since received an email from State Farm, asking for additional information, including my SS number. I consider that odd. After some google time, this appears to be "normal" procedure, with insurance companies, but, not a legally required request, by law. I haven't responded to their email yet. Any thoughts, or experiences with a similar situation ? Thanks

Re: Filed claim against State Farm . . . .

I NEVER give out my SSN, unless it is for some required reason, such as taxes. Not worth the risk.

My wife just retired from State Farm and she said they would never ask for your SS number. She said to call either the claims dept or a local agent.

Re: Filed claim against State Farm . . . .

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory once asked for my SS number before I could enter. I refused and was shown the door.
My contact there called me later to ask what happened and I told him. He didnít seem to think giving out a SS number was that big a deal.
Long story short is that I did eventually sell them a large generator set but through a third party. I guess the third party did not have an issue with it.

Re: Filed claim against State Farm . . . .

After rereading State Farm's email, slowly, while not being in a rush, to get out the door., ... S F was not requesting my SS number. They were saying, IF I needed, to provide them, my SS #, or any other sensitive information, they had a secure email channel, that I could request, from an agent. Oh well, ... false alarm

IMO, most business ask for too much info, none of their business.

OTOH, doesn’t matter as every $12/hr employee has access to my/your SSN anyway.

I’d rather fret over a timing curve change than argue w/some goofball as to why they need my SSN !

Re: Filed claim against State Farm . . . .

Often companies ask for SSN because it is their policy to do so. Next time ask them for a copy of the government regulation specifically requiring them to have your SSN to process your claim. That usually stops or deflects those kinds of requests.

The one thing you have to admit about State Farm at least from their ads is when you call them you don't get some person from India that you can't understand.
