augh!

So Wednesday morning, my daughter sends a text to my wife; Her prius sounds funny, like a truck, so she is going to take our family minivan to school. My wife and I commute together (4 days a week)in our 2009 Camry.

I was trying to think of what would make a prius sound like a truck, and 2 blocks from home, I had a horrible thought...

Sure enough, I get home and my suspicions were confirmed...

Some A-hole stole the catalytic convertor!

My neighbor caught it on his Ring camera at 2:54 am, but not enough detail (small SUV, but can't even determine make/model)

So I start looking on-line. I check Rock Auto, Amazon, Summit, O'Reillys and Autozone, and Google, and cats run $100-$400...

But upon further investigation, those are all "non-CARB approved" replacements... Nothing for California... Checked a few forums, and fine that for California CARB compliance, the ONLY cat available is genuine Toyota... List price $2100+, local dealer advertises $1635 + tax, lowest I found in the area...

And I found that selling used cats is illegal, so the wrecking yards don't offer a used alternative... Saw a few on Craigslist "parting out", but the cats were one of the first things gone...

So here I sit, car is worth about $4000 (repaired and passing smog), so its probably worth it to buy a new one.

I'll also need to buy a new O2 sensor and fab up so sort of anti-theft device (thinking a sheet of expanded metal, held with button-head, allen screws)

And I think all be looking into some security camera for my house... Any suggestions?

Just the thought of the added expense is making me rethink my Chevelle frame powder coating... Even though the Chevelle money is set aside, I am now just thinking about overall expenses...

And trying to keep calm... Jus thinking of how I'd like to catch the guys in the act (although realistically, not a good thing as cornered animals can be dangerous)...

Once you go RAT, you never go back...

I would think Home Owners also. If it was in your yard.

Re: augh!

I didn't realize this was still "a thing"! And you'd think that any metal recycler should report someone coming in with a pile of freshly cut out cats.

As far as insurance, home owners insurance will not cover the car. Car insurance should cover it under comprehensive (it's a theft/vandalism coverage). This is where some people lose out because of having ridiculously high deductibles (like $500) makes any claim pointless. As far as I know, a comprehensive claim will not raise the rates.

As far as security goes - even just having motion sense lighting could be enough to deter a lot of theives. Hard to hide in the spot light.

Re: augh!

I hid my cats under my 66 Chevelle so no one would steal them. So far so good.

Re: augh!

Check local shops for someone with a Prius who recently failed smog for the cat. Since it's not easy to sell, it was probably someone who needed one.

they caught these on a camera and were pretty quick at it

getting to be quite a common thing for some reason.

When I worked at GM dealer we came in on a Monday morning driveshafts and tail gates out of all the pickups were gone and all the transams were sitting on there floors right in front of the showroom
