Car Wash Sign

I found these 6' x 8' carwash signs the other day (both the front and back), still crated up and never used. So I brought them home and they cleaned up really well. My question is in regards to their age, I assume they may be from the 70's. Notice the sign say .25 cents for 5 mins, about what time frame would that place this sign? Being born in '87, if never seen prices that low. Thanks in advance for any advice

Re: Car Wash Sign

1979 is my guess. The minimum wage was about 2.90, I was still in high school driving my first 69 Chevelle through Huntington Beach with the surfboard hanging out of the trunk. The quarter was is still there and now charges 1.00 for 4 minutes.

Re: Car Wash Sign

Those are big signs!

I would like to have a large lighted Hooters Sign like one below in my garage. But I am sure Hooters would not like me taking it so there goes that idea.

That was the priceI paid in the local self service wand-type carwash in the mid 1960's (1965-66, etc.)

Re: Car Wash Sign

Those signs are cool Skyler! Are they ceramic? If not, what material are they made of? Don't know how many you found, but my guess is they are probably worth a couple of hundred apiece. Are they all the same? Great score.

Unfortunately, they aren't porcelain, they are plastic.

There were two of them in the crate.

Heh... reminds me of an incident long ago. Back in '86 or '87, some local college kids stole the Elby's Big Boy statue from the front parking lot of the restaurant adjacent to the shopping center I worked at (drug store). We're talking 8 foot tall Big Boy - like Dr. Evil used as his escape rocket! Anyway, 2 days later one of my coworkers was on trash duty and went to open the loading dock door ---- and got a shock. If I recall, she said she screamed. There was the big boy sitting right in front of the door. Guess the heat was too much and they couldn't risk getting spotted putting it back so they dumped it there. Besides... dunno how they'd ever fit it in their frat house or dorm anyway.

So... if I bring my car over, can I get it washed for 25 cents?

Cool find. They are vacuum formed polycarbonate 'pan' faces.

Over a grand each if you had to have them made today. Lexan ain't cheap!

'66 El Camino, 327, 5 speed, 3.31 posi.

Custom painters don't screw up! They just add more graphics.

We still have quarter car washes here, but it takes a pocket full of them.

Re: Car Wash Sign

Nice sign even if it's not porcelain!! Early 70's a lot of guys in the area use to meet in a car wash on Saturday nights...cars scoped out...wagers made. Drive 2 miles away where some permanent markers were placed and well...you know. Very nice signs!!!
