fought DMV ...... and won

5 years ago I was sick, no sleep .. worked stupid hrs and wife was sick with cancer treatment ( that all turned out good)

So went to a doctor and he said I may have sleep apnea and suggested testing, a sleep study ( already had bad issues breathing due to several fires while in the military , disabled vet now)

after I left his office he called DMV and had them pull my license

I took me 3 months to get it back'

Then it got worse, every year I would get a letter from DMV saying they were going to pull it again if I didn't get a physical, so i did..
next year, same thing, then again. we are not talking CDL or anything special

this year I took all the DMV crap to the doctor and told him to get it straight, he signed paperwork and wrote a letter stating I didn't need to be tested every year.. and I took it to DMV, they said, see you next year.. ERRRRRRR>>

so I called the hospital board of directors and the governor's office, gave each one each others phone numbers and said go at it.

got a letter from DMV today, don't need any more test !

But you had to go to the hospital board and the governor to get things done. I am very glad you got the DMV to see the light, but you shouldn't have had to go to such lengths to get this fixed. Kudos to you though for being willing to take it up and up the chain to get some action instead of just continuing to suffer at the hands of uncaring worker bees.

I could write a book on what it took to get a simple car title transferred to me from the seller when I bought I car from California. California DMV = blackhole of uncaring incompetence.

Seriously, I lived in Alaska a couple of years and the DMV there was super easy... moved back to CA and its like they are illiterate. ON TOP OF THAT, they wanted a vin verification on my truck, which pissed me off but I was going to do it... Nope CHP was 3 months out so I would have to pay late fees since the DMV is unwilling to extend the 20 day period when you start the paperwork.
I went and traded it in on a corolla. I miss the truck but I HATE the DMV here. The employees are probably the stupidest people I have EVER had to deal with.

AND To top it all off... My fiance and I went to get our real IDs on the same day... She got hers for free I had to pay 38 dollars.

I understand that AAA, and also some insurance agents in Calif can do those inspections. It's been a long time since I had to deal with paperwork from California, but that what I remember.

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

Glad you finally got them to do something right.

Speaking of drivers license, mine expires on my birthday (12/25/19) and I couldn't pass the eye test.

Went to get eye exam for glasses and the doctor said I have cataracts and have to have them removed first. He said you are 20/40 and may not need glasses after the cataracts are removed.

Spent almost three hours yesterday getting all kinds of tests before finding out the first appointment I can get for cataract removal and replacement of eye lenses is in February.

I told my wife, to heck with it, I never get stopped anyway, I just won't renew my drivers license, then my son said but if something happens, the insurance company will say "NOPE, the vehicle was being driven by an unlicensed driver".

Now I need to go back to DMV and see if I can get a temporary extension on my drivers license.

About getting titles and tags at the Kansas DMV, it depends on who you get to wait on you, some of those people don't know what they are doing and some of them are trying to be so strict they make everything difficult.

Switched the tags on both Chevelles to antique tags and got a letter later that said I owed money because she didn't charge me for doing it.

I use AAA for DMV stuff whenever I can. They donít do everything but they also have zero lines.
I could not remove a car from non-op status or get a real ID at AAA but other than those two issues I canít remember the last time I had to go to the DMV.

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

Went to the MOT(DMV) here for the Renewal for my 67 Permit/Lic $240.00 for 2 years

The Paper part was falling apart because it is so old
asked how much to get a new one and told $ 30.00

I said for what, it is only a small piece of paper
clerk says " because it is a protected/legal document "

My reply was " I have scotch tape at home, I'll fix it later myself "

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

When I bought my car out of Ohio I had to take it for a Vin Check at any Emissions testing place. You don't have to have the car inspected other than the Vin Check and no emissions because the car is so old. I also put Antique plates on it from the start because having them you can't be assessed at more than $500 for city taxes a year.

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

I actually had a pretty good experience with CA DMV this year. Moved down from Washington with a Corolla and two old British bikes, also had to get CA driver license. Checked-out the on-line make-an-appointment deal...two months wait, so I just went in to the local branch around 2pm om a Tuesady or Wenesday and got in line.

The driver license, I failed computerized test first time, so I studied-up and did it again. Took my stuff to the window, and said: "be sure to put motorcycle endorsement on". Oh no sir! You gotta take the motorcycle test too. Third time at the window was charm.

HaHa when I got my first motrocycle, and my first drivers license in CA back in 1961, I don't remember anything about a motorcycle test or endorsement. Just got the motrocycle, and had my high-school buddy show me how to ride it, and away I went. My daily driver for two years. Helmet? We don't need no stinkin' helmet. I got stopped by the CHP for a loud muffler on the bike one time with no issue about my license.

The car change of title and registration was easy at AAA. The motorcycles ID verification I just did at the CHP. It didn't take long to get an appointment, and I just loaded them in the pickup, one at a time, and made the trips to their office. You can see the frame number and engine number with the bike on the pickup. There was a discrepancy with one of the frame numbers, but I had some documentation from the US branch of AJS/Matchless owners club, so that got straightened-out OK.

So one of my rare visits to the DMV here in California was a strange but ultimately satisfying experience.
I bought a brand new car in Minneapolis, MN because the ones here in CA all had at least $5k “additional dealer markup”. So when I got home and went to the DMV they wanted to see the car to make sure it was legit and not a rebuilt salvage car or ??
They spent about 1 minute walking around the car and said good to go.
I then had to pay sales tax in CA because I didn’t pay in MN and the DMV guy asked me “what is the car worth?”. I started to say “I paid ..and he held up his hand and said “ I didn’t ask you what you paid, I asked what is it worth. You drove it here so it’s no longer a new car”.
I was like, WTF? But quickly just dropped about 20% off what I paid and told him. No further questions and I paid my tax on the value I gave him. Saved me about $800 bucks.

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

Rule number 1 when it comes to the DMV in any city. KEEP IT SIMPLE . Describe what you need in one sentence. Anything beyond that and your in for the blank stare. Once you see that then your wasting your time saying anything more. The clerk is so confused their off to their supervisor who looks at you from a distance looks back at the clerks notes and tells the clerk to tell you something you do not want to hear. That's why the police are there to escort you out of the building while your calling the clerk dirty names. Anyone who's had a satisfying time at the DMV which wanted something beyond one sentence is a very lucky person indeed. Examples of one sentence, renew my license, lost my license, need a new tag, need a new title.

Re: fought DMV ...... and won

My experiences at the DMV are more successful than many listed here. Even when I was just a punk kid waiting in line, I would read all of the notices posted on the walls. I had read through many of the hand out manuals before hand and knew what I was going to say, mostly. Reasoning is not a strong point for people that have to resort to screaming. State your case and stand your ground. If things don't go the way you planned, escalate your case to an official that is higher up the food chain. I have gotten titles for vehicles that the counter worker didn't want to issue me because I knew the rules, and bought license plates (personalized) for cars I hadn't even bought yet. Make them get out the state manuals and read the rules. It will even help the next person that comes in that has a similar situation.
