Good Thick Bacon?

I tried to make some Pig Candy which needs thick bacon for best results. The Thick Cut bacon at Walmart seems to be no thicker than regular bacon. Is there a brand that really is thick cut?

Look for a local butcher that can cut it thick for you. Trust me, you will always go back for more.

Re: Good Thick Bacon?

My grocery store carries "steak cut bacon" in the meat case. It's about a 1/4 inch thick.

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I like the Costco, or the Safeway thick cut, also Safeway runs it on sale a lot. I can't figure out why bacon is so expensive, and pork is pretty cheap.

Might have something to do with supply and demand, everyone wants bacon and for the most part the rest of the pig is not as good. If the rest of the pig was not cheap who would buy it. And the curing process I suspect would add some costs. As the old saying goes if you don’t like the cost buy something else.

Re: Good Thick Bacon?

Schwan's has some of the best thick cut bacon I've ever had. They have a pepper bacon version too. Don't know if Schwan's delivers/operates in your area though.

I had their filet mignon one time. It was the best that Ive ever had. The meat was so tender , you almost didnt need to have teeth to eat it.

I guess they ship now (packed in dry ice) so even if they don't physically deliver in your area you can get their stuff. Not everything they sell is fantastic, but their meat and poultry products are typically very good. Ice cream is killer!

Re: Good Thick Bacon?

Ok. I will try Costco. The last time I looked for it there I must have missed it. The regular bacon is pretty good. Dickman's is about 3 miles away.

Re: Good Thick Bacon?

My wife gets Hempler's thick cut at the counter at our local King Soopers. I don't eat a lot of bacon but it's the best I've ever had.
