The listed weight for a SS El Camino on the ChevelleStuff chart is wrong-wrong-wrong. Most likely they copied a small block weight. NHRA shows 3500 for a base SS 396 El Camino.

Just as an aside, I have never had any problem getting my stock class drag race cars under NHRA's listed shipping weight, sometimes way under. When I see other people listing what their cars weigh, I often wonder what they have secretly filled with lead.

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

BIGOT is a word used by people that can't use logical reasoning to prove that you are wrong when you don't agree with them.

Re: How much does your car weigh

Last time I corner scaled my 71, with the stock 12 bolt and conventional springs it weighed:

3806 lbs
2150 front
1656 rear
56.49/43.51%

71 Chevelle SS454
All steel
full interior
iron 454 with aluminum intake
T56 Magnum
QT SFI bellhousing
3.5" driveshaft
Aluminum rad
235 & 295 tires
Stainless steel Rick's tank
FULL tank of gas (22-23 gallons)
No driver

I've done quite a few weight savings on my car, and it is still a tank. I have found several things that are just really heavy. Steel bellhousing (31 lbs), T56 Magnum (approx 140 lbs), Stainless EFI gas tank (52 lbs), full tank of gas (~145 lbs), full 3" exhaust (86 lbs). Also one of the biggest fluctuations in weight can come from wheel/tire combo. Anyone running skinnies and bias ply slicks are saving TONS of weight. When I go to my drag tire setup (skinnies + 295/55 drag radials) I save about 69 lbs.

Re: How much does your car weigh

My 72 weighed (minus me) 3440lbs on a truck scale with about 1/2 tank gas.

Since then I removed the AC suitcase and the condenser, went to a slightly lighter battery and finally a mini-starter.

According to my fish scale I used to weight the AC equipment, my calculation now says I'm at 3990 lbs.

Engine specs below. Aluminum Torque Thrust II's are probably helping too.

'72, 385 sbc, Voodoo roller, 219/227; .515/,530 lift; AFR 180cc Eliminators, RPM Air-Gap, 770 Avenger, TH350 trans, 12 bolt 3.42's, Eaton Posi, TCI 2000 stall, Pypes 2 1/2" X-pipe system w/Race Pro's
Vehicle weight: 3390 lbs

oooops. I meant 3390 lbs after the few weight reductions.
