What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

Gale Banks had a couple of see-through differential covers made to see what goes on. Hopefully the differential guys will chime in with their thoughts.

Re: What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

He's got a complete series of videos on his YT channel about this. Been following it there. He just released the final video a few days ago. Haven't watched it yet. The clear covers did show some interesting stuff!

Re: What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

It is good to see someone doing actual measurements and visual work. That is a lot more than most of the aftermarket gimmick companies do I am sure.
When I worked for Dana Axle we had a water spray on the carrier to control the temperatures during lab testing, even when there is no load on the gears. Churning all that oil sucks up a lot of power.
Thanks for posting that.

The clear cover demo really shows what Chevy was doing with the eyebrow on our 10 and 12 bolt stock covers.

Re: What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

I was watching this series when deciding on a rear girdle for my 10 bolt. Ended up with Moser. I was running an old proform cover I had laying around. Went from too hot to touch (radiating heat) after a drive to you could put your face on the diff w/ the moser cover it was just warm. His research made me pay attention to the insides of the covers and choose one with the correct fluid path.

Banks really dug in and figured out a problem no one addressed, he honestly did a great job, but he might have problems trying to sell the patented cover for $500 as I've seen it listed.

Re: What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

That was interesting. I have heard it said that when you break-in a new differential you need to avoid high loads, get it up to temperature (it gets hot when new) then let it cool. Cycle the hot & cold a few times & you are ready.

I see a lot of finned covers on new trucks to throw the heat. Few used to worry about that sort of thing years ago.

For the money Banks is asking, I would hope it comes with a girdle.

I've heard of used car dealers stuffing sawdust & banana peels into a noisy diff to quiet it down long enough to sell. Pretty dumb thing to do if you already have the cover off.

Re: What Goes On Inside Your Differential??

I've had a lot of "stock" components on cars and trucks fail during my 55 years of driving.

But...never a rear differential.

So, I question the need for Banks super duper Ram Air cover at ~ $500 on anything but a high gross weight tow rig.

It doesn't look like the bearings are getting much oil.

I have to agree with you..... My 76 K5 Blazer went 110,000 before the Pinion Bearing Failed, and currently has another 220,000+ on it. Admittedly that was not towing much, but the truck does weigh close to 5k. I have replaced a few "Axles" over time, but considering they are somewhat of a wear item, I think that was acceptable. The rear has a "Hickey" Cover, which with the added fluid, kind of doesn't go with what Banks says. They don't make a cover for my old Dinosaur anyway....lol.....

Ideas are like children: there are none so wonderful as your own.

Whether or not you find a need for what he has to sell you, it can be a warning of what not to buy in the aftermarket.
