Another B17 gone!!!

I just read that 909, a B17 owned by the Collins foundation, has crashed and burned. There are 2 fatalities and several injuries reported.
At this time, there is no known cause reported. This is the second total loss of a B17 in recent times. The other was Liberty Bell a few years ago. Myself and some of the other members of our group had just gone through Liberty Belle a few weeks before it burned to the ground---------------believed to have been caused by a fuel leak in flight which caught fire from an engine exhaust.

This is a prime example as to why it is taking so long to get our A26 restored to perfect flying condition------------------NO TINY DETAIL CAN BE LEFT TO CHANCE!!!

Just saw the story about Nine-O-Nine. Terrible news. We saw Baby Duck (P51) at the local air show a couple weeks before it went down. Like loosing a family member to some.

Re: Another B17 gone!!!

Our local TV news (NBC affilate) just said there were 7 fatalities.
From what I've pieced together, they lost one engine in flight and the pilot was trying to get the plane down and the landing resulted in hitting a building. That may not be correct.

I toured that exact plane a few months ago. So sad to hear of the crash and fatalities.

Re: Another B17 gone!!!

I heard a portion of the communication between the pilots of the B17 and air traffic control, the pilot reported the loss of number four engine and requested a return for landing.

Re: Another B17 gone!!!

Sad news to hear that 7 people had died but at least some of the passenger and crew survived and that's something good.

I was going to fly on her just a few weeks ago with my brother and sister. Got our plans changed by weather. Sad to hear about it and that lives were lost.

Re: Another B17 gone!!!

Had just seen 909 in August. Several of the Collins planes fly into the airport I work at every August. The lives lost is a tragedy as well as the aircraft.

Re: Another B17 gone!!!

The loss of lives is devastating that being said they should ground all those ww2 planes or at least stop them from carrying passengers in them, let them be shuttled to airshows. Every so often they crash destroying the plane plus a loss of human life. Pretty soon there won't be any left for us to see at airshows or as a static display. There isn't enough whisky in AZ to get me in one of those 70 year old planes.

Well.... isn't that ridiculous? Lots of us regularly get in 55 year old cars and hit the road. I guarantee those old war birds get more meticulous care by professionals that really understand the gravity of these old gals than what a lot of shade tree mechanics put on public roads.
