Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

I've always liked the first generation Camaros with the Houndstooth Inserts on their seat upholstery.

TMI will make a full set (front and rear) of black seat covers with Houndstooth inserts (black and white checks) for a very reasonable setup price for my 'Bu.

The Wife says "no, they're Camaro styling cues and would look stupid on a '69 Chevelle."

What do you guys think?

Do you agree with me: Like Them.
Do you agree with The Wife: They're a Camaro only thing.

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

Funny, I thought long and hard about this during the time I was figuring out what I wanted to do with my '68 interior. I absolutely LOVE the houndstooth look. I do agree, it is a Camaro type thing, but if you are looking to change up the interior a bit, go for it. Reality is, most "regular" people out there without in depth car knowledge are not going to associate the look of that seat with a particular Camaro versus your Chevelle. If you do go with that, can't wait to see the finished project.

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

I think its an excellent period correct look rather than obviously custom.
Kinda like, if chevy had offered it as an option, here is what it would have looked like.

IMO- much better than doing velour or tweed inserts, or some wacky modern thing with metal eyelets punched through everywhere.

My $.02

FWIW, I was very close to having legendary make me covers using black 1969/1970 comfortweave material inserts instead of stock vinyl but went a different direction at the last second. (I should have done the comfortweave!)

I agree, if you are going to deviate from %100 stock, might as well make it yours. I really enjoy making a car the best way I could based on a year range of parts/tech available. GM had the parts, what if they put them in this car type of thing...

Cool idea. I think it could be awesome if the proportions and execution are done "right", or really awful if done "wrong"

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

Back in my used car dealer days, I used to buy all the 67 68 69 Camaros I could get. Some needed interiors redone. I found a supplier for hounds tooth seat material that came in a lot of non Camaro factory colors. Thought of having a Camaro redone with blue and white hounds tooth inserts in blue seats. Never did it, but I think it would have been a stunner.

I say go for it.

I say do what makes you happy, but I personally donít think I would care for it on a chevelle. I voted no, but in the end, who cares what I think. Enjoy YOUR car how ever you choose

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

Back when I bought new leather upholstery for my 93 Camaro from leatherseats.com they offered it as an option. I wish I would have went with it. At the time I thought it would look funny on a newer Camaro, but now I think it would have been cool. I say go for it.

I was quoted a "set up charge" of $120 over and above the price of the seat upholstery. I thought that was pretty reasonable, given that it is semi-custom work.

I specified 1971 upholstery due to the way the '69's upholstery is sewn -- the '71's take an insert much better. Due to this being a special order, ordering over the phone is best.

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

I say yes. A few years ago at a car show, I saw a '69 Camaro SS396 in Forest Green, with dark green metallic vinyl with green and black houndstooth inserts. I stared at it for a long time until it hit me what I was looking at. The owner nearby had been watching and said he could tell from the look on my face when I "got it". It was a custom touch that looked stock.

It is a rare man who can count his own blessings and not mistake them for personal achievements.

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

i deviated alittle from stock selections on my 68 convertible when redone..
living in the desert, vinyl seat covers are hot and sticky on bare skin...
had the seats done in a velour cloth with and insert similar to those.
used the stock pattern so they looked quite nice

Re: Houndstooth Upholstery Insert Yes ot No?

Sounds like an interesting idea. I'm undecided about whether or not I would like them. Think I would have to see them to decide. One thing I am certain of though. You could certainly pick a lot worse material style.
