Rx, Dr.s and insurance..

Wife's been saying I need hearing aids since im always going "what?" We get a flyer about our insurance covers the 1st $2500 for hearing aids. So I went and got a hearing test and sure enough I do have hearing loss. I sit in the consultation and the specialist goes on a spiel about the different hearing aids and wants to have me come in a week later. (Im guessing to verify the insurance) I mention being frugal and dont mind shopping around. Costco starts at 1600 but doesn't take insurance. So I go to the audiologist and isn't it amazing.... they have a budget set of ears for $2500.
Of course I can get the better set for $3600 or the best ones flr 4800.
I was wondering if my insurance covered say $2000, would they pull out a different price list with the starting set start in at $2000? Jim

Re: Rx, Dr.s and insurance..

My dad paid almost $5000 for hearing aids & doesn't wear them. He said pricing was scam. He can hear ok I guess. His problem is he doesn't pay attention to what people say.

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Re: Rx, Dr.s and insurance..

Jim, If you were in the military and worked in a high noise environment, you may be able to establish a claim with the Veteran's Administration. All it takes is a 10% disability for Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). That will entitle you to hearing aids at no cost to you and free batteries and other supplies for life. So, if your military specialty caused you to be exposed to an environment which affected your hearing, contact one of the Veteran's Service Organizations such as Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), AMVETS, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart and let one of them guide you through the process. The VA provided me with what are probably middle-of-the-road hearing aids that do provide relief. They will never be like your own ears when you were young and healthy but they do help. Some guys have issues adapting to them but I was determined to adjust to them and my wife is a happier person for it.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

thanks for the information. I wasnt in the military, always worked in the printing industry with noisy machines. I believe these new hearing aids come with a charger, so no buying batteries. The insurance allows for new aids every 3 years. jim

Jim, after spending 32 years of being a business owner, ("hearing aid peddler") I can offer you some insight if you want it. I've only been retired for about about 11 months, so I'm still pretty current on this stuff. Give me a call if you want to.

Bill, I've always been curious about why these seem to have such a huge range of prices for what appears to be a small amount of technology/mfg. Even the Costco ones get advertised as per "unit" not per pair which gets the price back up in to the stratosphere.

What makes 1 better than another? I'm not referring to the <$100.00 ones that are advertised.

Re: Rx, Dr.s and insurance..

Just passing this along. I am 79 and have been using my extra ears for 10-12 years. This all started around 1958 ( C/G 38 Chev. Cp.) with loud exhaust and 60 years of playing bass in a band, ( Played last night ).
My old ears had the clear tube with sound sent through the clear plastic tube. My new ears ( got them about two years ago) have a very fine pre bent wire with tiny speakers on the end of the wire, It puts the little speakers about 3/16" away from the eardrum.
In addition to the new ears, I got a new i-phone, ( went from flip,, trac phone Walmart to this, WOW)
The new i-phone is BLUE TOOTHED to my hearing aids, Very neet for a geeser. LOVE the new ears, I will ask the wife on the cost. My Ins. paid--ZIP-NADA !
Why did I get hearing aids, Well,,,,,,, My wife new when I was home, HOW.....? She could hear the TV while driving up the driveway....
The brand of my new ears are called " ReSound " they cost around $ 24/2600.00.
Remember,, " You should hear what you are missing " !
