Classic Car Insurance?

What type of car insurance do you guys have out there? Do you have classic car insurance or just standard? What type of car do you have? Ever had to file a claim and did you get enough money to repair the car? I have a 1972 chevelle I am working on that should hopefully be road worthy in a few months and just planning ahead. Thanks for the input!!

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I have classic car insurance through Larue. They are great to work with, but I have never had a claim.

Safeco Classic Car policy here. Which ever company you go with make sure its an Agreed Value Policy , anything else your setting yourself up for disappointment and monetary loss.

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I have a policy through Farmers (limited use). I provided a professional appraisal to set the policy value.

Hope I never have to use it...

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I just added it on to my Erie car insurance policy. Even though it is titled normally, I have reduced rates since they (correctly) assume it will only get used occasionally 6 months a year, with a couple 1000 mile trips per year. I told them what I wanted coverage for (I think I said $16,000, not sure) I need to check again. Just in case it does get stolen or totaled. I figured if someone offered me close to that, I would think about it, so I was fine with my rates being based on that amount.
Being an El Camino, and occasionally I do (gently) use it as a truck, I didn't want ANY legal excuse not to be covered. If you read small print on many things like classic insurance, and Antique plates, they typically all say "No Cargo" or something like that.

First off. You need Collectors Car insurance with “agreed value”. This way, if it’s totaled for any reason, you get a check for that agreed amount. I had a totaled claim with American Collectors and received a check in 2 weeks. I’m currently with Grundy MPV since the wife has a newer Collector car. I also have Condon Skelly for my daughters corvette. Make some calls and shop around. Most are reasonably priced and have unlimited mileage

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I have hagerty also. I had a claim and they couldnt have been better about it. They basically told me to take the car where I wanted and they didn't blink when they got the estimate. I had a check immediately. They didn't raise my rate as a result either. I've also used the roadside assistance to be towed home twice and no issues there either.

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I just switched to Grundy today. I wasn't eligible until this year when I turned 25 but they're charging half of what I was paying for the National Corvette Museum insurance.

Re: Class Car Insurance?

You HAVE to get the classic car insurance and "agreed to" value as discussed above. I attempted to get a policy through my "regular" car insurance. They had ZERO clue on how to do it correctly. I was actually asked at one point what the cost of the Chevelle was originally (as in 1968). Was a complete joke and the lady I was speaking with truly didn't know what was going on. I ended up going with Grundy as many people in here have already recommended. I did check Hagerty, but Grundy was easier to deal with and a better price.

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I've got Hagerty on my '72 Chevelle and my wife's '65 Mustang. Agreed upon value for both, $45k for the Chevelle and $28k for the Mustang. $450 per year for both.

(The Z28 isn't currently registered or driving - it's a project now.)

Re: Class Car Insurance?

I went with Hagerty the first year and they wanted more when it came time to renew. So now in the second year I'm with Grundy. I upped the agreed value by $10,000 and still got a lower rate with Grundy.

Re: Classic Car Insurance?

Had Hagerty Plus for 7 years at an agreed value of 60,000.00 on my 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MKlll, and an agreed value of 42,000.00 on my '66 Chevelle SS. Total annual cost was 935.00. Recently sold the Healey, shopped around for a better price for the Chevelle only, and switched to Safeco - paying around 350.00 yearly at the same agreed value of 42,000.00. Rates will vary from different classic car insurance companies depending on where you live (I believe they go by your zip code - not sure 'tho,), and how and where the vehicle is stored. I also had to prove that I owned a second "regular car" for my everyday driving at both companies.
