AMC Gremlin

I have a Big Bad Green 1970 Gremlin. I really like the simplicity of the little cars. I've been thinking about modifying it, especially chopping the top to make it more streamllined. The plan wouold be to lay the front windshield back, the back glass forward and move the roof rearward and drop it. Anyway, what's your opiinion about my chopped top idea as illustrated below?

Don't hate me for dreaming.

I think I'm going to work on a rendering with the front end extended about 6" too. It needs a longer wheelbase for stability.

Re: AMC Gremlin

The chopped top makes the car look out of proportion. Maybe there are some paint tricks that can be used to give that effect.

How fast are you planning to drive where you will need the extra six inches of wheelbase to improve stability? Is it worth the hassle to lengthen it?

Re: AMC Gremlin

The 2nd photo does look much better, but that seems like a lot of work/time and money, for a Gremlin.

Re: AMC Gremlin

96" wheel base on the Gremlin and 100" on the Pacer.
94" on a pinto 91.3 on a 280ZX .

For stability I would see about chassis mods ..and possibly lowering the engine and trans.
Basically getting center of gravity lower.
But this is Hot Rodding and you build it like you want to build it.

Re: AMC Gremlin

Personally Gremlins or the Glass Houses (Pacers) never did anything for me but that car looks like it's in too nice of shape to start chopping on the body.

Re: AMC Gremlin

I wouldn't cut that thing up at all,it looks way to nice to do that. Wanna have some fun drop a 390 or 401 in it and smoke the tires off. Back in the late 70's there was a young guy who had a red one like that and he worked at the local AMC dealer. He dropped a 401/4 speed combo in it out of an AMX and surprised a lot of guys with hot cars. He had a little trouble getting it to hook at first, seen him go through the first 3 gears once and the car didn't move more than 50 feet.

Re: AMC Gremlin

I looked for years to find an early small bumper Gremlin like yours. I'd rod the heJJ out it but never hack the body. If it can't handle, intall wheelie bars.

Re: AMC Gremlin

I know where you can get one and do whatever you want with it! It's stuck in the woods along the Clara Barton Parkway. Was washed there during the big flood in '96.

Re: AMC Gremlin

Ok Don't worry about cutting up the pictured car...it's not mine. That's a '72 but that color wasn't available in '72. I have two Gremlins, the '70 and a '74. I'd cut the '74.

Here's the lengthened version and the candidate.

Re: AMC Gremlin

There's a big difference between the two cars even though they're both Gremlins. I guess I'm judging a book by it's cover but the second one will just be a Gremlin.
