Lots of history gone. Sad day.

Very strange...iconic structure destroyed during Holy Week

A beautiful, historic cathedral...very sad.
Irreplaceable.
We were fortunate enough to attend mass there a few years ago.

What a gut punch. So horrible and sad. It will take decades to rebuild it.

Re: Paris church on fire!

It’s more than a Paris church. When I visited Paris, seeing Notre Dame was high on my list of places to go. I’m not religious, but respect the beauty and history of the building and what it represents. It’s an unimaginable loss to not just Catholics and Christianity, but the world. Hopefully there are some areas that escaped the reach of the fire.

Re: Paris church on fire!

Building codes & fire codes may have been updated over the ensuing 850 years since Notre Dame was built. Also some of the building materials cannot be duplicated. We were at Basilique Saint-Nazaire in Carcassonne, France and were told that they cannot reproduce the stained glass to the original standards (it hasn't faded in 600 years). It is a lost art, and also perhaps because of environmental standards (lead etc.) Also there is a Gaudi-designed church in Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia, that has been under construction for the last 200 years (and I thought our renovations were bad ). My point is, perhaps they may be able to rebuild Notre Dame but it may not resemble what it was and it may take a few generations. Also some artifacts are gone forever

Re: Paris church on fire!

Most likely some stupid renovation mishap caused all this damage. What a shame.

Re: Paris church on fire!

I would suspect that this was no accident. A monument to Christianity like Notre Dame Cathedral is a prime target for certain people who are not Christians. Paris is crawling with them and terror attacks are almost routine. My brother and his wife were there last year and he said the place looks like Mogadishu. This is coming from a left wing liberal bleeding heart college professor so it must be REALLY bad.

The interviews came as right-wing provocateurs attempted to seize upon the Note Dame inferno to spread conspiracy theories designed to fuel anti-Muslim hate.

Neo-nazi figurehead Richard Spencer said he hoped the fire would “spur the White man into action”, while French far-right troll Damien Rue and British InfoWars contributor Paul Joseph Watson both claimed without evidence that Muslims were celebrating the ruin of the Catholic cathedral.

I agree this is most likely the cause, but I'm no fire marshal. I remember when Reggie Jackson suffered a great loss of his musclecar collection from a fire that happened while crews were installing fire prevention equipment. Ironic isn't it?

Given the sort of attacks that are well-documented in Paris, well you do need to look into this, obviously.

Already the sides are trying to paint this as evidence of a militant Muslim agenda. The media is trying to shut down anything that even suggests this. I suppose it is inflammatory and will be taken by some as a call to arms. It is reasonable however to ask the question, that is unless the media & politicians are bending over backwards to placate the Muslim threat.
One day at a time.

Meanwhile France has thousands of other ancient churches. I remember going on a country roads tour in France that one Aussie in our group called "An ABC Tour", which when translated from Australian meant, "Another Bloody Church!" I guess after you have visited dozens one could feel that way.
