Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

Wondering in anyone has a metal roof on a shed/pavilion/ garage/gazebo/etc. If so what is your opinion compared to a standard shingle roof as far as wear, noise in weather, etc. What are the benefits and drawbacks?

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

if you don't insulate beneath it or have a ceiling it gets very loud when it rains.
Also scares the heck out of you when acorns drop on it.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

Painted metal roofs last forever. Shingles grow moss, curl, lose their effectiveness over time. On the couple roofs I've done, I used sheeting, felt, and insulation with moisture barrier underneath. Not noisy at all. Galvanized roofs tend to show rust past 25 years or so, at least in the NW.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

My garage is 25 yrs. old and is all metal (pole barn). Roof and siding look great still. As said, if uninsulated it is very noisy when it rains but that doesn't bother me. The nice thing is that snow doesn't stick and pile up...a couple of warmer days and it slides off (makes a lot of noise when it lets loose and slides) so no shoveling necessary if and when we get heavy, continuous snowfall. I sometimes have to shovel some of my house roof but not the garage.

Replaced the architectural style shingles on my house and shop three yrs ago ($14+ K).
Would have preferred a color metal roof installed on my shop but HOA won't allow.

Could you have used metals shingles/shakes?

There is nothing better then listening to rain on a tin roof.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

My brother built a garage with a metal roof... Yeah, pretty loud when it rains...

I have a patio cover with a metal roof, a bit loud...

But, I also noticed that when in the direct sun, the heat radiates down. If there is a breeze, its fine, but if its very still, its almost unbearably hot under it... But I added a ceiling fan to mine, which seems to have solved the problem...

metal roofing is much more durable and will typically outlast even architectural shingles. has a stigma of 'cheap' for residential use.

as Cheveslakr stated, if done correctly the sound issue is not significant. typically the loud roofs are the ones without sheathing and definitely no roofing felt. but if you prep the roof as you would prior to putting shingles on, then the 'tin roof' noise is definitely minimal. My main shop is metal roofing done with sheathing/felt/insulation. not any noisier than my newer shop addition that I shingled with architectural shingles and insulated.

now my RV canopy, just trusses and metal roof. I hear every acorn.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

Standing seam meatal roofing is used a lot for architectural detail on a lot of homes in this region. Porches, bay windows, even see this detail on sections of a home's main roof for homes designed to look as "farmhouse" which is popular in Chester County.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

Another disadvantage to just a metal roof without some kind of barrier under it is there will be condensation and it will "rain" inside after it's been cold and it suddenly warms up if you have a concrete floor. My pole barn is a typical barn with the metal screwed straight to the purlins. Loud as heck in a heavy rain, and the floor is wet after a warm up.

Re: Metal Roof On Outdoor Structure

I love my metal roofs. When everyone else in my area was either shoveling snow off their roofs or watching their buildings collapse about a month ago, I was in the house sipping coffee and taking comfort in the fact that the snow had all slid off my roof on its own.

See my comments above for my take. Many around here are going with metal as they replace their roofs. There are many new styles/colors and they have a good guarantee..in many cases equal or better than shingles. In northern NY (Adirondack Mt. and surrounding areas) you hardly ever see new construction with shingles...all metal + steep pitch = no shoveling.
