That article rates the 70 Chevelle LS5 at 365 hp, when GM only rated it at 360 HP. In 1971 GM rated the LS5 at 365 hp.

Camaros were 'pony cars' I thought - whereas a 'muscle car' was a mid-size car with a larger V8 ala GTO. So that also discounts full size like Impala and Corvette (sports car ). But these days anything with a loud muffler and people call them muscle cars.

Ö and stickers.
...and a rear wing. (even on a front wheel driver)
...and wheels with lower profile tires.

I'll take the '68 L78 Nova with an M22....

Almost bought one new back then but couldn't afford the insurance. Even the same colors as the pic. Regretted it ever since, and it's still on my bucket list.

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

The '68 L79 Malibu survivor as found in Nov. 2014, in my profile pic.

I would argue that with a heavy Big Block in them, they weren't very sporty or pony-like either.

The lines kind of blur a bit but I think regardless of the original 1964 definition, the "muscle" defines the musclecar more than the size of the body it's in.

At least in my mind 69 Z28 Camaro = Ponycar, 69 SS396 L78 Camaro = Musclecar. One was built for agility, and the other brute-force.

Re: The 5 best Chevy muscle cars that arenít Camaros

If we're talking of the typical neighborhood car show classifications I have to agree with Ron's definition of a muscle car, although I participated in (or simply attended) shows last summer where best muscle car awards were presented to a late '60s-early '70s Nova with a small block and an early '50s Willys gasser that looked more like a clown car than a muscle car. I also attended a show where a small block '68 Chevelle won a "Best Chevrolet Muscle Award".

My car and several other very nice genuine muscle cars (one a documented '70 Buick GSX Stage I) were entered in the the show where the Nova won.

And that is why I prefer the 'Best FACTORY Muscle Car' classification to simply 'Best Muscle Car'. No guessing, no clones, no bulls__t.

Valid points!

The lines blur easily. Which is the muscle car? Nova with 350hp 327, Chevelle with 325hp 396, Impala with 265hp 396.... all of them I guess.
