1964-1968 I.D. Tags

The identification tags on 1964-1968 Chevelle radios can be found in various locations. These locations depended on the model year. The majority of radios originally had tags pasted on the side or near the tuning shaft. The key piece of information is the Model Number found on the I.D. tag. This number can be referenced to reveal the original application of the radio.

The MODEL number is what can be referenced, not the IDENT. (Identification) number. Typically the model numbers are six to seven digits in length, beginning with a 98 or 73 prefix. Unfortunately, these model numbers are not as helpful as the ones found on 1969-1972 equipment. 1964-1968 equipment can not be decoded without a list of model numbers indicating the original application. The Model Number Database contains this information.

Some 1968½ equipment did not use the typical number format found above, but used the same model number system found on 1969-1972 equipment. To decode this equipment, follow the guidelines in the 1969-1972 tags section.

The above radio (model 986528) is a 1966 Chevrolet AM pushbutton radio correct for a Chevelle/El Camino. Remember, even if a radio looks the same, if it does not have the correct model number listed for your year/vehicle, it is not the correct radio!
