Subject: Fan shroud...how far should the fan
Comment:
How far should the fan be in the fan shroud?
I have the original fan shroud, the original water pump (short), spacer, and the 68 malibu came with a small block yet the fan might barely even get underneath the fan shroud? Should I go with a long water pump? If I do then what would I have to change?

I've always been told the fan should extend half way under the shroud.

1/2 way into the shroud and 1/2 out of the shroud should be ideal. You can get spacers (1/2", 1", 1 1/2", or 2") to go between the fan and the water pump at an auto store. The long water pump would push the fan too far forward.

I agree with everyone who responded above and would like to add one thing: If you did put the long pump on, none of your other accessories would line up, you would need all new brackets, etc from whatever vehicle application the long pump comes from.

My 68 Malibu has a 1/2" between the fan and the
shroud. It a Stock 307 with short pump and four
blade fan.
