Would anyone have the original cam specs for the
396/402 375HP motors. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

According to HP Books, How to Hot Rod BB Chevys. Part number 3863143 has intake/exhaust lift of .500/.500 and duration of 306/306 degrees. It was used in L-78/396, L-71 and L-72/427 and LS-6/454.

John,
Actually the factory kept changing the specs on that cam. In 1965, it was a hydralic lifter cam with a intake lift of.461, exhaust lift of .500, intake duration of 342 and exhaust duration of 356.For 66 it was changed to .520 lift on both in. and ex. and 336 duration for in. and exhaust. In 1967, same lift, but 316 in. duration and 302 ex. duration. These 67 specs were the same through 1970 and were used for the LS6 cam in 70 and 71.

The '67 to '70 cam had .520" lift at zero valve lash. At .050" lift it was about 245 degrees duration and about .500" lift when taking lash into consideration. Cheater cams ground within the GM specs performed pretty well. I think there was definitely method in their madness. This cam is still an excellent choice for the street.
