Default How long to wait before buffing new paint?

I just had my 66 repainted last weekend. I had to wet sand a few spots. I want to put the car back together soon so that I can drive it. But, I don't want to put the emblems, bumpers, chrome moldings, and door handles on until it has been buffed, just to turn around and remove them again when I take it to get buffed. Also, would it be best to leave the rear 1/4 extensions off when it gets buffed, and put them on later? Oh ya, I painted it Spectra Red again, but I added some Red Pearl. How long should I wait?

Assuming you have base coat clear coat, you can color sand it now, and buff it in a week. Yes, leaving the extentions off would make it easier.

Thanks 67shovel. Yes, I used a base clear. About 3 coats of paint and 3 of clear. I have been doing some color sanding, as well as reassembly. When my arms get tired of sanding I do some assembly. I will be taking the car to a local professional that uses a synthetic aircraft wax system. The name of the establishment is called Vital Wax. How much $ should I expect to spend on a quality buff job?

I'd wouldn't touch a color sand & buff for under $200.00 and that was in the late 80's. Color sand the whole thing (if it needs it) and bring it to your buffer guy. Have him finish the buff job and then bring it home to add the jewerly. Buffing slings compound everywhere so don't add your trim until it's done IMHO.

once the clear has set - usually about 2 days - you can start wet sanding and buffing and polishing. I agree with the compound sling comment by 67shovel and only add the emblems after you're done.

Ya, I'm currently doing the color sanding with 2000 grit. I just talked to the buffing guy and he says he can get me in in about a week. He says it will cost about $3-400. I told him that the car will not have any emblems, moldings, bumpers or door handles or antenna on it when he gets it. Man, I need a vacation from the day job in order to get this done. 8 hours a day at work and another 5 hours in the garage after work.

What clear are you using??
Some of these clears get super rock hard and even 2000grit too coarse IMO.
With the super hard clears those 2000 grit scratches many times cant be buffed out. If you do remove them you spent many a few more hours doing it.
Sanding with 3000 grit is the only way to finish off those super hard clears that wont be buffed in a certain time frame, and in your case 1-2 weeks is way out of the ballpark.
3M sells 3000 grit da paper that works like a charm, Norton also sells a similiar product but at 4000 grit.

If you dont care to final sand with a da and have the proper tools, Meguiars sells some of the best sandpaper called Unigrit. They make it in 2500 and 3000 grit. The nice thing about the 3000 grit is that it actually starts to buff the clear plus remove those 2000 grit scratches. IMO finishing up with 3000 grit is the only way to fly.

I think it was PPG Omni clear that we used.
