The springs will handle .550 - .560 (hyd flat tappet <6000 RPM). But the guides will need trimming for retainer/guide clearance over . 550 ( .540 to be safe). Besides, the stock heads flow well but level off at .500 with the stock valve sizes and factory machining in the bowls anyway.

I think stock lo-po springs are only good for about .500" lift MAX. and the 350/360hp springs are good for some higher as are the .500" net lash 375/425hp solid cams springs.

Heck, the lo-po cams only lift like .398"/.420 " or so don't they?? And the 350hp cam like .460"/.480"?

I need to get my "brains" out and check?????

pdq67

PS., run the springs you need for the cam and if you want cheaper ones that still will work, then check out Competition Products long spring list..

I strongly suggest that you run the springs that are recommended or a cheaper, same spec. spring.

And the only way to actually know head chamber cc is to measure them!!

Open chambered, large oval heads vary from as small as about 112/113 all the way up to at least 122 cc's.....

Or you are guessing at what your CR. calculates out at, imho!!

Valve springs are the absolute worst place to cheap out. If, or should i say when, the spring gets weak it will pull the top off of the valve and you'll drop a valve a possibly lose the whole motor. Get the absolute best valve spring you can afford even to the point of waiting to finish the project until you can buy good springs. I recommend Isky or Manley Nextek if a roller or Isky, if it's a flat tappet or hydraulic and good keepers and locks. The major cause of valve failure is weak springs.

Unhappy Re: How much lift c'an a stock BB spring take

I guess that leaves out the great old, el-cheapo, Z-, (-142) and LT/ZZ or whatever the later stock springs are that are dirt cheap, at least for SB motors.

AND I wouldn't run the stock springs that come on 454 P/U motor's -781 heads on a bet!!...

Hi pdq67, I absolutely wouldn't use any Chevrolet spring as i've found them to fatigue rather quickly. The ZL-1 retainers are O.K. but the springs and valves aren't very good. If a good spring with really good seat pressure is kept on the heads all the other parts in a big block are real strong. A friend of mine dropped a valve in my old 454 and tore the heads up pretty good. I haven't used Chevy valves or springs since.
