Guys,

A friend has a '69 Olds Cutlas with a 350. He has a 327 from a '66 Chevelle and a 427 from a Vette. His question is, will these engines both fit in the Olds without much modification? He has the turbo 400 from the Olds, and the one from the Vette. The bell housings look to be different lengths. Which would be the easier swap? The 327 or 427? Are the mounts for the Olds in the same location as the Chevy?

Thanks much

Don't know about the fit of the engines, although they should both be a straightforward bolt-in. The Olds tranny WILL NOT fit the Chevy blocks. The case is different in the front. His TH400 has a "BPO" case. Chevy is the only one of the GM brands that has a different case. He can get a Chevy case pretty easily and swap the guts into it. THEN the tranny will bolt right up.

I don't remember which years, but, around this time the General got in BIG trouble by putting Chevy (Corporate) engines in Olds. There were lawsuits and everything. Seems people felt cheated by paying for an Olds and getting a Chevy. (Good deal if you ask me) If its one of these, it would be a snap to swap.

Remember this all GM A bodies used the same frame. You'll probably need new engine mount pedestals for the motor mounts.
IMHO I'd drop in a 455 with that TH400 you'ld get a lot more torque.

To put an Olds motor into a Chevy, or a Chevy motor into an Olds, or, whatever, here is what has to be done. IT IS TO EASY! For the sake of an example, let's say that you want to install a Chev 454 into a 71 Cutlass. The Chevelle and the Cutlass are both GM A bodies, and the chassis are basically the same 68-72 for both (Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, etc). Use the Chevrolet frame brackets in the Olds chassis and then the 454 drops right in just as though it were going into a Chevelle. And if you wanted to put a 455 Olds motor into a 68 Chevelle, just bolt in the frame brackets from a Cutlass then drop in the Olds motor. All of the GM cars, within the same group and same generation, such as the A bodies, will have the holes in the cross member for the various make of engines.

As mentioned, the Chev and BOP have different bell hlusing bolt patterns, therefore, only a bell housing or auto tranny for a Chev will bolt up to a Chev block and the same for BOP. Although, in later years, GM started making dual bolt patterns on the trannys.
In regards to manual trannys, whether its a Chev or Olds, Pont, etc. engine, from the flywheel surface rearward, all is interchangeable. The 11in clutch, throwout bearing, bearing fork and linkage, Muncie, etc, will all swap from the Chev to the Olds to the Pont to the Chev. Tranny mount on the cross member wil be the same also.
