Default 540 solid flat tappet

Ok guys I guess I better get ready to be chastised. I'm wanting to use some Iron open chamber factory rectangle port heads on a 540. I also would like to run a solid flat tappet cam --reason being I have stupidly limited myself to 590 lift beehive springs also Am gonna run at 10.00/1. I know this isnt the best combo but it looks to me like it ought to be okay. Now begin the chastising.

Nothing wrong with a solid flat tappet cam at all but any cam/spring combo should be selected together. Iron heads are fine but you better zero deck that think and keep the quench as tight as possible. Just be sure to select the right cam with your compression.

Well its not a done deal but the short block I was looking at would yield that. So what do you think the max comp. I can run is and if I had a cam with lot of duration would that help? I'm just trying to come up with something do able with the iron head 540.

Well its been kind of a cluster. I had originally intended to get a 502 short block . Had 2 sets of iron heads --one set open --one set closed. Initially I was going to build the closed chambers to put on a 502 to get the compression up some. But then I got to looking at some short blocks built on the Dart Big M and decided if I was gonna go that route to build the open chamber heads. But--I already bought the Beehive springs because they would have been fine with the GM shortblock. So now I'm trying to get a 540 plan together and use what Ive got.

That Isky is about what I had in mind--that is to push the lift as close to.590 as possible but I have seen some other solids which have different durations between intake and exhaust. Wonder if there is anything to be gained there.
