My 71 has an HEI now but ofcourse came with a points type. A friend was saying I need to bypass the resistor wire that runs to the distributor. Is that correct and so where should I run the new wire to?

I have a 70 Chevelle, with a sbc 350 running an HEI. I didn't do it, but here is what I have. A 12v+ hot wire from a switched accesory terminal on the fuse block running to the HEI 12v+.

I have read on this site that you can pull the spade lug the resistor wire uses from the terminal block and connect a non-resistor wire (10 guage maybe) to supply the 12v+ to the HEI. NAPA had the connectors I think.
There are some good tech refs too. Start here. http://www.chevelles.com/techref/tecref5.html

Note that the resistor wire is some kind of stainless steel or something so if you cut it and try to splice into it at the firewall, it doesn't work too good. tom

What I did on my 69 was find the resistor wire in the firewall plug and remove the spade connecter from it. Then I went to the salvage yard and found an A body car and removed a ten gauge wire from it's firewall connecter. Put it in my plug and connected it to my HEI. Looks just like factory.

I just did this on my 68 and this is the way it worked on mine. First I found the wire on the back of the switch marked ign. it sould be a large pinky red wire, it goes to the fuse panel to power my idiot lights and through the bulkhead conn. and turns into a small w/or/ppl wire that goes to the + side of the coil. That is the resistor wire, but since the HEI can and needs the full 12 VDC the small wire is not needed. So you can tie into it where you want but make sure the main wire from the switch gets to the fuse box to run other things, if you feel lucky unbolt the bulkhead conn. and find the res. wire and pull it out and replace it with a 10 GA red or pink wire, best bet is to go the junkyard and cut it out of a car with HEI so you get the correct conector. Or the other way would be to splice into the big pink wire somewhere along the way and run out to the dist. Like I said this is the way it worked for me but it should be close to the same. Good Luck

P.S. Get the wiring diagram from Year One, well worth it.
