Default Vinyl top molding clips

I'm working on a project with a friend. He has a 1966 ss 396 with a black vinyl top. The car does not have the correct moldings around the pillar He now has the correct moldings but does not have any clips. what type of clip do we need and how many for a 4 piece set. and how do they attach to the body. somebody installed some sticky back plastic chrome moldings. we removed them and didn't find any holes or studs. we are assuming that someone filled them as it is smooth under the junk moldings. Thanks for any info on this matter

I you look on my thread you should see the holes and how the mldgs go on. I ordered repop ones and they fit pretty good. There are clips with a screw on each end that go on the outside of the pillar and studs with nuts that go on the inside of the pillar. Make sure you well seal the clips with rubber sealer when installing to keep the water out of your trunk.

Thanks for your response Elroy. Great start to finish photos on your 66. I'll pass this on to my friend. How many clips are needed for each short & long base rear pillar molding? Thanks for the tip on the waterproofing.

SC article on 67 install.

Rear windshield clips are different than front. At the rear there were little studs welded on the pinch weld area, then clips that attach to the studs. You will have to weld on studs or buy the little screws that act as a stud. I believe Ashleys for one has them.

On the front the top of the pinch weld and the bottom of the pinch weld had the little welded on studs, again you can weld on studs or buy little screws that act as studs. Along the sides the clips were held on by screws. If you buy the correct set of clips you will have 6 clips held on by screws and the remainder held on by studs (or fake studs that are actually screws.

The vinyl top also is held in place by 2 screws at the front and 2 screws at the back.

There is a good post someplace on TC showing installation of the vinyl top, if your interested.
