I order a 383 longblock and it comes with 882heads with the valves opened up to 2.02/1.6 and the bowels blendid. From what Ive been reading 882 seemed to be pretty low performance. The engine builder said he gets about @ 375hp/380torque running a holley 600 with an elgin cam with dur.@50 222/222, valve lift of .447/.447. edelbrock perfomer. Well i have dyno2000 i entered the specs and i came up with @5500rpm 362hp/4000rpm 392tq. I wanted to get 400+ hp/torque. So i changed the cam to dur@50 230/230 valve lift .480/.480 with a 750 cfm and single plane. The specs are @5500rpm 390hp/ 4500rpm 412tq. Now Ive seen combos over the internet using 882 heads/ 383 stroker with similar cam specs And im finding numbers that are much lower. Ranging between 300-/350hp/ 330-370tq. How accurate are this desk top dyno's. I was thinking of getting the dart iron eagle 230 cc with 72cc I got this numbers @5500 417hp/4500 430tq Now are numbers for the 882heads seemed to be incorrect? Because I have yet too see 882 heads push past 400hp'tq( Well the engines combos on the internet) Now is it wishfull thinking to get 400+ with 882heads or should just explained to my wife I need to spend $800 dollars more for the darts.(I can see her face now..." you dont need more hp!"}

Check out my post in the "Performance" forum, titled "Track Results...Dart Iron Eagles." I got a pretty enormous performance increase by going from GM heads to Dart Iron Eagle 180's.

German,
The Dart 230's are too big for your combo.
You need to stay in the 180 to 200 range max.
I run AFR 195's on my 383.
The Dart 180's that Mike mentioned would do well with the 230/.480 cam you listed WITH a dual plane intake. You don't need a single plane intake with your combo.
Give us some more info...tranny, gears, daily driver, car's use, ??

Well I plan on running 700r4 because of the overdrive. 3:73 gears in the rear. IT's going in a 65 SS chevelle and it will be used for a weekend crusier. The plan was to get the long block and drive for a year or so then get some aftermarket heads. I would like eventually end up @435-450hp/tq on pump gas.The good thing is i can get the short block instead of the long block and choose my own cam i was thinking of the isky 292. Now with this kind hp should I bullet proof the bottom end and can I get away with hypereutic pistons? In terms fo the heads i was under the impression the more flow the better? Is it still better to keep the flows lower around 180 to 200 range? Now regarding the single vs dual plane i've read that the dual are better for the lower rpm and single for the higher rpm. But when I use my dyno2000 the single plane out performs the dual? Thats why im worried how realistic the numbers are.

thanks
german

In my opinion, torque is what makes a heavy street car fun to drive, and also probably makes for quicker 1/4 mile times. I think Bill is exactly right about keeping your heads sized reasonably and using a dual plane. 230cc heads and a single plane intake may make more power way up in the RPM range, but it won't have low speed torque worth a darn.
