What camshaft specs should I look for to gain max bottom end torque for a bone stock 350? This is for my 93 chevy truck that I tow a boat with. Any recommendations or experience would be appreciated. This is a flat tappet hydraulic engine.

I have a 1990 with a 350 and have been wondering the same thing. After comparing 20 or more cams on Desktop Dyno (for what its worth), I have found that the stock cam is hard to beat with stock manafolds. I plan on adding a set of headers soon, should add a good bit of torque in the 2500 rpm range where I need it.

When I rebuilt my 400sb for my truck intended for towing the Chevelle, my machine shop recommended the Crower "Baja Beast". I can't recall the item number at the moment but I can look it up if you like. You might be able to find the specs on Crower's site, if not I have the cam card in the truck somewhere.

It is a nice low end torque cam since it is intended for off-road trucks. My engine has small valve heads, about 9:1 compression and pretty much stock everything but the HEI and the cam. It's got plenty of low end grunt.

Dragn70, what you are doing is what I have been doing. Plugging in various cam specs and even using the iterative testing portion. I was hoping someone on the board has been in a similiar situation and what cam worked out for them using stock manifolds, stock everything, but the cam.

Rich, I will see if I can find the specs and plug that in.

A -929 is 195/202 at .050 duration so try to shoot for something at or below 210 duration at .050"! Imho. pdq67

PS., and the Performer cam at 204/214 seems to be a dandy here, but it is off older tech design...

Try to avoid the Crower site! Man! I've never seen so many pop-ups in my life!

Anyway, I already did it for you. The Crower Baja Beast specs as:

Part #: 03015
RPM Range: 1000-4500
lobe center: 112
Duration: 283/286
Duration @ .050: 204/214
Lift: .422/.444

In my 400 is has a nice idle though needs a little extra idle speed from stock to keep it running in gear with an automatic. Tons of torque up to 4500 but then completely is out of breath but then so are my heads. Mine is also running stock intake and exhaust manifolds and Q-jet. It was built to be bullet-proof reliable and it has been for 16k miles.

Check out the comp cams 260H. My first cam swap ever was in a '69 chevy 1/2 ton with a '77 smog 350 that was bone stock. The stock cam went flat, so I stabbed in the 260H and the difference was night and day. Stock convertor, 3.08 gears...the only mods was an advance curve kit in the HEI and dual 2" exhaust from the factory 307 small outlet ram horns. The difference was unbelievable...it would smoke the tires super easy, and got 3mpg better gas mileage than the stocker.

I also run the 260h cam in my truck and am happy with it. Good low end and throttle responce.

I even have a smaller cam a XE256 in my Nova. Not exactly the right cam for a car but it makes well over 400' lbs. from 2,000 to 4,500. Would make a great cheap truck motor!
