Default Antenna Front or Back

I've always wondered why do some '69 SS models have the antenna in different places? Some on the right front fender, others on the right rear quarter? Is the difference between the actual model that had the SS option ordered to it?

Rear antenna was an option, but only if the car was ordered with an AM radio. If you ordered an AM radio, but didn't order the rear antenna, it went on the front fender. All AM/FM radios got the antenna on the front fender.

Thanks Bill,
Okay, now I understand the rear antenna was an option with an AM radio. I never knew why. Was it still available as an option even if ordered with the AM/FM radio? Or, like you said, "All AM/FM radios were front antenna".....only?

No Option available with AM/FM radio...the antenna was front mounted.
Standard location of antenna with AM only radio was also up front unless optional rear location was selected.

my 69 vert project came with a factory AM/FM radio and a rear mounted antenna.now i know over the last 40+ years any could have been changed.but my question is why only a AM radio for a rear antenna?now logically this does not make any sense to me.if they are going to mount a rear antenna, why would you not be able get AM or FM radios?the only difference is the head unit itself and the location of the antenna.right?all the wiring is the same to the unit.so is a rear mounted antenna cable any different that i would not work on a AM/FM radio?does it have any thing to do with the length ?
so if you are willing to pay for the cost of upgrading to a rear mounted antenna and AM/FM head unit.plus it does not cost GM any more money in labor to have some one install either a AM or FM radio.then why not?you have already paid for the cost of the upgraded radio.if its just about money then its a money maker when you figure in the cost of the upgrade but no added cost in labor when it comes to just putting in a FM head unit verse AM.just a thought.
now does any one have paper work showing only AM radio with rear mounted antenna?if so my case is mute...

I'm not sure that I'd consider a rear mounted antenna as an ''upgrade'' ? It's more work to install and does nothing to improve the radio's performance. I'd prefer to 'keep it simple'' and leave it on the front fender, or even better in the windshield.

call it what you want (option/upgrade)but it was not standard equipment.if it was then all chevelles would have had them in the rear quarter panel.

I do prefer the look of the antenna on the back quarter more than the front fender. I think the reason for front mounted antenna with FM was due to db loss / interference associated with cable length. Not sure about the 69', but pretty sure 66' was AM front or back...AM/FM front only...

Love the look of the rear antenna. And Bill Rose is right on the am radio only option. 1st gen Camaros same thing, as probably with most GM cars back then.

The factory dealer albums and dealer order forms for 65 and up specify that the rear antenna could only be ordered with an AM radio and was not available with an FM radio. Now, if a car arrived at the dealership with a rear antenna and AM radio, and the customer said "I'll buy it if you put an FM radio in it," then the dealer surely would have happily done that to get the sale! But it would not be a "factory" combination.

As to why that was the "rule," I don't know. But I'd guess it has something to do with the AM-FM mast being a non-adjustable, fixed length mast, which was longer than the AM mast when fully retracted. The FM mast was made at the (alleged) "optimum length" for FM reception. Perhaps mounting on the rear (slanted at an angle) changed the FM reception characteristics. But thats' just a guess.

I agree with Jeff to a certain degree. I might also suggest that, considering the FM was a "fixed mast" unit, it would have been more susceptible to breakage from passers-by due to the location of it being at the very rear of the quarter. Whereas on the fender the exposure would not be as great due to the close proximity to the windshiled. The telescoping AM unit could at least be lowered which may prevent such breakage.

Just thinking out loud is all

I have the rear mount on my 69, and the one thing that it easier in my eyes is maintenance. If I need to remove it it's very easy to get at from inside the trunk.

My Chevelle came with a AM radio and front mount antenna, during my restoration I found a 69 AM/FM Multiplex system and also opted to relocate the antenna to the rear quarter panel only because I personally liked the look. I was also lucky enough to find a NOS rear antenna set up. The AM/FM works just fine for me with rear antenna.

My '69 has an AM/FM radio with a rear mounted antenna and no sign that there was ever an antenna mounted anywhere else. The radio looks original.
