Went out to the '67 an hour ago to see how it was doing after sitting for a week 'cause of the weather. Opened the hood and a squirrel jumped out. Don't know who was most scared. Anyway, there was a mess under the hood. Valve covers and hoses all gooked up, plus the suckers had built a nest behind the battery. Gotta keep the '67 under the carport as the '70 is garaged. How can I keep these rodents out of the engine compartment?

Try a can of mothball flakes!! Just take a "Church-key" and make a small opening in the bottom end so it will stink up the hole he crawls in..
I had a groundhog that I thought was cute as the dickens UNTIL I found out he was tunneling down under my driveway right at the corner of my house down to the gravel backfill at the foundation drainage pipe.. Got rid of him in a heart beat!! pdq67 |

Sister in law had a Groundhog under the hood of her Honda
He mad a mess of some wires and hoses. She had to poke him out with a broom, did not want to leave his cozy home.

Put some anti-freeze in a little bowl under the hood and let it do it's thing. Works every time.

Antifreeze will work AND I just had to look into that issue at work last week b/c somebody asked the big Boss about animal/bird deaths that may be caused by air pollution and all I really found was info on solid and hazwaste caused deaths!!
I webbed for three days looking for stuff to give him.. pdq67 PS., Darned old cats kill more stuff then you can imagine!!! As do birds flying into clear glass windows!! |

Leave the hood open and they won't stay. Out here in the desert some areas have a problem with pack rats getting into the engine compartment and nesting or just chewing stuff up. If the hood is left open they go elsewhere. And these are daily drivers for the most part. I still haven't got used to driving thru subdivisions and seeing all the hoods up.

Get a cat. I've got 5 of them, and I hardly ever see a squirrel in the yard... well, except for the ones I find killed, mutilated and disemboweled on the porch now and then...

Thanks for all the replys. I'd really rather have a squirrel around instead of a cat. I actually think it has something to do with the chrome under the hood, have two others I park outside and have never had a problem as they are not chromed up. Will give the Antifreeze a try but if I end up with a dead squirrel, cat and dog under there.........

I had my three trucks lined up next to each other in my yard. A Ford F250, a Dodge Ramcharger, and a Chevy van. Friggin chipmunks ate all the rubber hoses in the Dodge, and left the Ford and Chevy alone. They even chewed a hole in the fuel line that went to the tank from the metal line on the frame. I had to drop the tank, after draining 36 gallons of gas out of it. It figured itjust filled the tank the day before. It was an all day job to change $0.50 piece of hose. I say kill the varmints before they start to chew.
