Default oxygen and acetylene tank refill

What are folks paying these days to get their oxygen and acetylene tanks refilled? My dad has been helping me out a lot lately and I want to return the favor and get his tanks refilled. Neither of us have ever done it before so I'm not sure of the process, where to go, and how much I should expect to pay.

We own the tanks but no paperwork and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want to be in exchange situation.

What do you think?

Thanks!

I would start calling local welding supply places and asking them.

I had to scrap two of each large tanks because they were not mine and I couldn't find anyone that would refill them.
(I suspect that my cousin that I inherited every thing from when he passed on must have "borrowed" them from his job.)

Thanks Dean. I found an Airgas nearby that wants me to bring the tanks by so they can check them out and decide of they want to fill them or not. If they are willing, I am paying. Otherwise I'll have to make a few more calls.

Be careful here. I bought a new welder and a NEW tank a few years ago, about 6 months after I bought it my buddy borrowed the whole thing. While he had it he went through a tank of gas, so being a nice guy he took the tank in and they exchanged it. The next time I needed a refill the AirGas guys told that tank was very old and hadnt been pressure checked in 10 years and charged me $80 for the pressure test. Thanks a lot buddy.

Most places (AirGas Included) won't fill the tanks unless you got them from them to begin with. Don't remember what they initially cost but it was expensive. Somewhere in the $150-$200 each. once you get past the initial hit, the refill isn't too bad. paid about $40 for my C-25 refill last week at AirGas. Oxygen and acetylene are comparable from what I remember when I did gas welding and cutting.

Thanks guys. I'm not really interested in an exchange, I want to keep these tanks. They haven't been tested in over 10 years though so I'll likely get stuck paying a test fee. They ballparked refill prices at $15 for oxygen and $65 for acetylene but I'm not sure how big they are so it could be more or less.

I need to get my mig tank filled. I was a bit worried because I knew it hadn't been tested in over ten years. I was pleasantly surprised that a local shop was willing to do the test for twelve bucks. Might be different foryour size tank. Mines only a 3 foot tall (80).

Is it fair to say given the risk that you might not be able to find someone willing to refill the tank, that it would be best to avoid buying a O-A setup on CL? That would be a shame since they still generally want a pretty good money for their tanks which might junk to you if no one is willing to fill them.
