Default Bbc oil pan

I was curious if anyone could shed some light on this for me I was look at the street/strip milodon oil pan and then I seen the drag race oil pan 31188 with the dipstick provision. My question is would a street/strip oil pan work for me if i am going for low tens? I am building a 489 with 10.5 compression going to be shifting close to 7500 Rpms I know the 31188 or 31187 are going to need minor modifications to the subframe but my question is do I really need a drag race pan or will a street/strip pan work for my needs? thanks for any info.

A 7500 RPM motor with a 4.25" stroke is going to need a good pan like the 31188 or similar. You need oil control big time with that kind of RPM. You'll have to do whatever is needed to get it to fit in there. Do a search on here..there are several different pan options that have been posted with needed mods if any.

Jim pretty much hit the nail on the head. You should make the best effort you can to get the best possible pan in there. It's a cheap insurance policy to protect your investment as best you can.

I run a 31187 and use a sight glass welded to the side of it to check the oil level

if this is going in the 73 nova,yes you'll need to notch out and box in the subframe xmember,well worth it

Thanks for all the insight I actually will probably pickup the 88 as the dipstick provision and I know I might have to notch the frame a little I had about a inch of clearance with a 4 1/8 oil pan so i was figuring would give me about 3/8s clearance on the bottom of the pan. using solid motor mounts. I figured would be worth the extra cost as well.

The 31188 and 31187 Milodon pans are nice pieces, and they give you more room for the oil filter, the headers, and steering linkage than many other pans with the same capacity do.

I really like how the sumps on those pans taper inward on the bottom instead of spreading out like many Moroso, Canton, and other pans do. Not only does the Milodon sump design of the 31188 & 87 pans keep the oil level deeper around the pump pick-up because of the inward tapered step of the sump, but it helps to provide greater clearences too.

I have a question that maybe I missed, why are you shifting a 10.5-1 489 at 7500. That should require a healthy cam and decent compression to go with it. I don't think a cam for 7500 will like 10.5-1. That being the question, if 7500 is realistic for rpm, can affect what pan you use. Anyway, like was said IF you can fit a side kickout pan then go for it. I am moving the headers in my car to use the 21049 Moroso. But currently I am running the Stef's 1041 aluminum pan in my car on the 540. I have run both this pan and the 20403 Moroso pans at 7500 with a 4.25 stroke. I don't disagree that a side kickout is a good improvement for a race engine though.

489 it 270/278@.050 302/314 on 109 .690/.680 lift afr 325cc heads 1150 dominator victor 454-R and read a post for yenkomike and people were saying a 272/282 were to big for his 540.

Side kickout is a good provision for anything stroked! Big crank, big weights = windage!

I would run the moroso but at 5in clearance It wouldn't leave me with much maybe a 1/8 of clearance. Then I would have to notch the front crossmember.

The rpm range is probably going to wind up there. But I would think that maybe you would be better off choosing a cam with lower duration numbers that will better utilize low compression and have a lower powerband. I can tell you I have a 275/287 @.050 in my 540 but I shift it at 7500 and cross at 7700 rpm. I also have 13.5-1 compression too. My car leaves off the trans brake at 4600. The heads are a safe choice, I ran 325 Dart Pro 1's on my 509. When I had my 509 I only ran a box stock 1050 on it as well.
