Default Will lighter fluid damage car paint?

A friend of mine used to paint cars every once in a while on the side for some extra money, and he swears by the use of lighter fluid (Naptha) for removing any type of tree sap or glues from car paint. I need to remove a bumper sticker that a car dealer stuck on the car I just bought, I had a tough time trying to get it completely off when I washed it. I was going to use the Bug & tar remover I had, but I ran out of it.

Can I use lighter fluid ease the removal of the sticker without it effecting the paint? Has anyone here actually used that before?

Billy
two words- Goof Off. that stuff is great for taking off decal material. I don't think is should hurt paint. I've used it several times & usually rinse the area off with soapy water when I'm done. hmardown

Use a heat gun to loosen the glue on the sticker & then goof-off to remove the glue residue.

WD-40 takes off a lot of the gluey stuff.

I would be careful with Goof-Off. That stuff is pretty aggressive. It will definitely remove the gum... but it may "cloud" the paint. I used that to remove gummed up protective paper from plexiglass and it started to work on the plexiglass too. Personally, I would not use it on a car...

Well, I went and ordered the Goof Off stuff, but I'll givethe WD-40 a try first. I always have the WD-40 on hand. Didn't even think of that. If that doesn't work, then I'll try the Goof Off and/or the Naptha ( Lighter fluid). I would probably try the Good Off after the WD and then as a last resort, the Naptha. I appreciate everyone's input on this.

X100. Sometimes takes a couple tries, but it works and doesn't wreck paint, glass, or plastic. It's the product I reach for every time I need to clean up sticker-goo. I have kids, so it happens a lot.

I noticed that on the Goof off website, they have a heavy duty strength, and an industrial strength, the latter supposedly being stronger. For those of you saying that you believe that it's too harsh for car paint, do you remember which version of the Goof Off you have used? The heavy Duty one, or the Industrial one? Just curious. Again, thanks for your comments.

Not sure which I used... I bought it at home depot. I used it on my 2008 BLACK silverado when I removed the dealership stickers. It didn't cloud my paint, but I didn't have to scrub too hard.m I bought the truck new & the stickers hadn't been on there long. Therefore, most of the glue stayed on the sticker, rather than on my paint.

This stuff works great. Its called Acrysol. I've used it to take off the adhesive from car dealer stickers, ect. I bet you can find it other places.

hope the link works.

Not sure if this helps, but here is a question taken directly from the Goof-off website:

"Can I use Goof Off Professional on my car without harming the topcoat?

Goof Off Professional can damage some automobile finishes. Use Goof Off Heavy Duty instead"
