Default Transmission Dip Stick Tube Issues

Hello all-

I have recently purchased a 66 chevelle and had to have the transmission rebuilt. After rebuild and putting it together it was noticed that the transmission was leaking. After investigation it was seen that the dipstick tube was not far enough into the transmission. This appeared to be a difficult fix since the tube is almost wedged completely between the firewall and engine block, but I got it tapped down all the way into the transmission and thought all was good. Well, it still leaks, and the weird thing is, is that it only leaks after it has been run, not during. It would also seem as though the transmission fluid is almost siphoning out of the transmission, since it has to go up to get out and on to the ground. I believe the O-ring may be bad on the dipstick tube and am going to replace that. I am just looking for advice in general, do you think that the O-Ring is the issue here? If so, can you recommend a better dipstick in general if I am going to have this one all the way out again? I am all for making that last bell housing bolt easier to get in as well.

Any and all advice is appreciated,
Thank You
Simon

Simon,

I had similar issues with my '66 and original dipstick going into a TH350. It was not cheap but I went with a Lokar flexible dipstick and solved the issue.
For either TH350 or TH400

Jack the car up as high as is safe on that side and remove the dipstick assembly (a bolt is holding the tube to the bellhousing). You may get some fluid running out of the hole, unless you have a drain plug in the pan. Take the old O-ring to NAPA and buy 2 new ones. Clean ALL the residual trans fluid off and out of the hole in the trans. install both O-rings on the tube about 1/2 way up to the flange and apply a small amount of blue or black gasket sealer to the O-rings and re-install the tube assembly being careful to insert it straight with the hole. Bolt the support bracket back on and you should be good to go. Did this on 3 - TH400's and so far none have leaked a drop. Good luck with it.

i've seen dipstick tubes that were cracked right where they go into the trans case before.. all the o rings in the world won't help with that. they crack where the tube bulges out right above the o ring groove, probably because they get bent when the trans is out or when someone is trying to force it into the trans case at a weird angle.

pull the dipstick out and inspect it. if it's wedged up against the firewall, take the bolt out of the trans mount and jack up the back of the trans to get the bellhousing away from the firewall.

The tophat seal is the only way to go. Here is a thread to check out.

Trying to get a 40 year old tube to seal peoperly is a tough one. It only took a minute in the last 40 or so years for it to get tweaked. And if the tube is on the firewall something is def up. Either you have the wrong tube, wrong mounts, or the frame is tweaked. If it has to be original it will take draining the trans and a bit of silicone. The Lokars are nice and are double oringed.

40 year old body mounts coupled with a 40 year old trans mount could put the trans dipstick close to the firewall.

Loose the O-Ring seal and go to the later top-hat type seal....that alone should solve your problem!
