Default K&N open top & side air filters?

Anyone here tun them? The kinds with not only the standard side, but top opening as well? I thought I read somewhere on here that they hamper performance. You would think it would help a 500-600 horse motor.

Any input?

I have the xtream lid with a tall filter I dont see how it can hurt performance. The more air the better. I went from a fram filter with a solid lid to the k&n with the xtream lid and noticed a deffinate improvment!

This is an old pic of my engine but I have the same filter. . .

Had a 14x3 Kand N now a 10X3 fram with Lid noticed no difference between the 2, ran exactly the same without any air cleaner at all, too.

how much extra flow does that lid provide when it's an inch away from the bottom of the hood with the insulation laying on top of it?

Looks like a party favor from an asian restaurant. Is there a fortune cookie inside?

been there done that. I tested closed top and open top with both sealed to cowl hood and say no difference. But this was in the 1/8 mile, there maybe something in the 1/4. But in theory in make good sense that fresh air is better for the engine even if it doesn't make more power. And if it looks good its a win-win.

Super comp cars have an air intake area of 14-16 sq. inches. They run 7 second 1/4 mile times.
Your street car has more area with a regular 2''x14'' filter

I have a 14x3 K & N filter on my 496 that is putting out 525 hp. Had it on the dyno yesterday and gained 5 hp when I took it off and ran without.

I did a back to back test last week on my wifes car that runs 10.70's in this weather. Engine is a 377 sbc and the car was .06 slower with the 3x14 element with the extreme top. You'll never feel a horsepower difference that causes a .06 difference.
