Default pulled the pluggggggggg

My sheetmetal/paint guy called me and said my 70 Elcamino is too far gone,,, after $8000.00 the body is on a rottiserie and new quarters, new bed with frame ,doors and lots of other new stuff still in boxes,,I dont know if I should be mad or happy. He sand blasted the underbody and said it was swiss cheese after telling me it was worth restoring..

Its been 5 years since this project started,, what the hell am I gonna do??

I'm going to stop by and see it today or tomarrow.

Well if it already has new quarters, bed and everything, you may be bale to replace the floors and just keep going with it until you have useable metal..

That sucks but I hope it works out okay for you

You are in too deep to bail now. Grab a new floor pan and continue your quest for brokeness like the rest of us.

The body is basically dismantled now only thing
new on the body is the floorpans.

The panel under the back window is rotted, the bed sides are bent up from loading stuff, the cowl is swiss cheese so he says,, not sure if he is baling on me,, says I owe him nothing right now.

I have the frame and motor and interior and brand new in the box SS dash and guages and all new wiring harnesses

I wish I could post pictures... cause I'm gonna get some.

Send them over to one of us to post here Steve. The rear window panels on ALL these cars and trucks are messed up. If complete, you will have a brand new car.

Okay,

so let me get this straight... You haven't paid $8k to the body guy for work, but $8K for parts that are uninstalled?

If thats the case, go find another body and go from there...

Yes, I spent 3 years accumulating parts which are for the most part ,,still in the box.
One quarter is removed , the new bed is clamped in place being "fitted". bad time to remove it from a rottisserie,, unless its gonna get scrapped. I dont know enough about sheetmetal work or welding to finish the work myself,, got a great mind to start selling my parts and buy something almost done.

OR, has the body man got cold feet and doesn't want to really commit to the time and rusty efforts? It is a big job and if he is busy everyday doing nice clean, newer, insurance jobs that he gets paid for daily, he may be just be bailing. See if you can get a "second opinion" from a classic car guy.

Sounds to me like you need to find another body man. There is no such thing as too far gone when it comes to these cars. They make an aftermarket body for the love of god... that means that they have to make every single piece for these cars.

hell man, I'll have replaced 60% of the metal on my vert by the time I'm done. no such thing as too far gone if it has enough structural integrity to pull it off the frame and it doesn't collapse.

As usual, Andy is right
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

Theres a clean 72 el Camino body on the chicago craigslist that can be had for dirt cheap. the car is originally from Arizona. I bought some parts from the guy and the Elco ispretty solid. I'm sure he's let it go for 500 or maybe even less.

Thanks for all the encouragement,,, hopefully gonna get to see it tonight and take some photos.
!970 is my year,,71is too new , so if you know where a 70 is,, you got my attention.

I think my bodyman who does this on the side and as a hobby has lost interest,,, he just went through a diificult time with his wife and job and they have relocated and he just had a new shop built. I didnt bug him for the last 10 months , being sympathetic to his situation,,

I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, that is a real bummer.Your bodyman is politely telling you it is over his head, and does not want to get into it.I have been in the autobody trade for 25 years and I can tell you this. There are not very many people who can rebuild a structure when it is this far gone,it is one thing to change a quarter or door skin, but when you are rebuilding cowl, floor pans, inners, outers, etc. It takes a special person to make everything fit and open and close like new,not just cut it apart and weld it back together, anyone can do that. You need someone who specialized in fixing train wrecks, lots of experience in frame damage and heavy collision. No offense to anyone who has done this in there home garage, there are lots of enthusiasts who are patient and can do it,but this is not the norm,I have seen 30 year autobody vetrans who can't.

Exactly. But the POS has taken money which puts you in a spot bent over with your pants down. It seems you need to persue some legal action. Eight grand should at least get all the available sheet metal installed.
