Default craigslist 454

hey all i found a decent priced 454 on craigslist. its not in a vehicle. whats the best way to check this thing over. the current owner claims 80k on it but thats ok i do plan on a re-gasket/cam/lifters/timing chain. but how about the bottom end? what are some tell-tale signs?

Here is a pretty good article from Car Craft mag. I like the idea of the leak down test. It also depends on how far the seller is willing to let you tear it down. That should also be a clue. I would pull the pan and a few rod caps and the rear caps.
Keep us posted.

If it has 80K miles it most likely needs a complete rebuild.
Only a tear down and check will answer the questions.

check the crankshaft thrust.

Tap the crankshaft all the way forward from the rear and then pry between the flange and the block and look for movement fore and aft.

If it's excessive, the thrust surface is worn and the crank will need to be welded and reground or replaced.
