Default Centering New Steering Box

When installing a new steering box, How do you go about making sure it is set on center before attaching the pitman arm and steering shaft?

The turns on the new box is 2 1/2 -3. So do i set it on 1 1/4 center or 1 1/2 center? or something completely different? Thanks so much for any and all suggestions... Marc

What I did on my 65 was attach the pitman arm so it is still removable. Temporarily mount drag link with both wheels staright.
Turn to right stop and count and mark it. Then experiment how many turns each way and make a mark when U reach 3 turns. Work from that point.

Count the number of input shaft revolutions full lock to full lock. Divide that number in half and come back from full lock that same amount. The pitman arm should be pointing directly back in line with the centerline of the gear. You didn't mention what year Chevelle but if there is a flat on the input shaft it should be exactly at 12 o'clock.
