Default What bell housing for a 454?

Im going to change over from a 350 to a 454 (both 4 speed). Can I use the 403 bellhousing on the 454? Or must I use a 621?I know the bolt holes line up on the 403 - just wonder if there is any other reason I cant use it that Im unaware of. Going with an 11" clutch.

The 454 uses an EXternally balanced flywheel which is the larger, 14in diameter and has 168 teeth. Thus, you have to use a larger bell housing such as the 621 to accomodate the larger flywheel.
Additionally, the 11in clutch will NOT fit the smaller 153 teeth flywheel.
If you use a GM Delco style starter, you MUST get a starter that has the CAST IRON nose and a staggered bolt pattern.

Okay, I got that part. I look on ebay for flywheels and I notice that many are for 12" clutches instead of 11" when it comes 454's. Are the sellers listing it wrong or just the newer 454's need 12" clutches?

In the history of Chev V8 engines, there have only been TWO sizes of flywheels, small-153 teeth, and big-168 teeth. That's it, even for the trucks.
An 11in and a 12in clutch both bolt up to the 168 teeth flywheel. A 12in AFTERMARKET clutch for a pass car (which will fit inside the 621 housing) is a much thinner profile than the truck 12in clutch. From the FACTORY, a 12in clutch never came in a pass car, only in trucks. Also, trucks used a different housing, which CAN BE USED on a pass car with an adapter ring.
Open this link. The information that I put together is on the first page. But, because I made a change to my Photobucket file, you must go to pgs 4-5 to see the pictures. I think this will provide the answers to most of your questions.
