Default 3 point seat belts - how do they work?

i hope this doesn't make me look slow, but how do they work? when i got my car all i had were the shoulder belts and not the bottom lap belt apparatus. how do they connect together? also is this a good system, or is there anything cheaper?

The 3-points are the same type of belt used in practically everything today. They incorporate a lap belt with a diagonal upper torso belt.

Try these Morris belts: http://www.morrisclassicconcepts.com...ge%20Three.htm

Call them for pricing. Summit also carries them: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRS-MCSB1-9-BK/

There are other, cheaper brands, but if you look closely, most other brands have only one anchor at the top. The Morris belts bolt directly into both factory roof anchors. I'm sure that they are much safer than just one anchor, not to mention that you'll have an ugly, empty hole left over with the other brands.

I have a pair in my car. They work very well. Very much worth the extra money.

ok so i get the basic concept. but why are there clips holding the shoulder part? does the buckle have 2 slots for the lap belt and and shoulder belt? or is it all 1 piece like every other normal seat belt. also did the back seats of the chevelle have a 3 point belt or were they just lap belts?

My '69 had both the stock lap and shoulder belts. The shoulder belts did not retract and had two sets of clips on each side along the roof to hold them up when not in use. When I bought the car, it had only one set of buckles -- you had to choose to buckle either the shoulder belts, or the lap belts. I did some research and what I read is that there should be two sets of buckles, one for the shoulder and one for the lap belt. Having to fold the shoulder belts to fit them into the clips and having to buckle/unbuckle twice seemed like a lot of hassle and uncomfortable so I went with aftermarket 3 points. The Morris seemed to be the best -- not the cheapest. I'll jury-rig a head lamp casing if I have to, but seat belts is one place I don't want to skimp.

OEM safety belts have actually 2 two-point belts: one shoulder belt and one lap belt. So you have two buckles for each seat (I think that for some years the buckle is on the shoulder belt and the clip on the seat). There's never been shoulder belts for the rear seats (although you can get them aftermarket).

Here is a picture of '69 interior where you can see the 5 buckles on the bench seat (2 per seat + 1 for the middle seat):

I don't think anyone makes repro shoulder belt. So you are kind of stuck with lap belts only or aftermarket 3-point safety belts. I went with the latter and you can read my review about the installation I've done earlier this year:

I chose Andover restraints. I looked over a few sets of Morris, and nice, but in the end I couldn't see much difference. Morris had a few "nicer" more specific brackets, while the Andover had a few more generic brackets (once painted and installed, they look and function fine). $180 for BOTH front seats (plus shipping), and they have a bracket to convert from the single to the double bolt for Chevelle roof mounts (the single stud is larger than the two smaller bolts).

Not only were the Morris belts a little more money, but I wanted matching REAR 3-point belts. Morris doesn't offer those (they said they were planning on offering them, but so far only came out with Camaro rears). I would have originally paid the extra to get Morris's, IF they had the matching rear belts, but I am now completely satisfied with the Andover product.

There are only a few companies (maybe just one?) actually building replacement seatbelts, so there's a good chance its the same manufacturer anyway.

I think there were rear shoulder belts offered in 1972? Or at least in other A-bodies, but VERY rare. There was some discussion on here a while back, and there are mounting points on the rear package tray that allegily correspond to the should mounts (even my '70 had these mounting points).

Well, you are right they did exist! RPO AS4 in 1970. It seems only 273 were ordered though (out of 540 315 cars!).

Default 3 point seat belts

658 Chevy ,
Thank You for your Compliment and purchasing our seat belts.
Also I am pleased that people like you take the time to look at Safety as we do. We use all of the factory mounting points as that is the way the manufacture tested the cars. We use grade 8 bolts GM used grade 7.
Look at our web page under customer photos and see the Camaro that was involved in a head on collision, They had our seat belts on. Both people survived , Can't put a Price on That. Our seat belts are pre-assembled, and
are year and car specific.
Thank You, Billy

Billy - what do you suggest for shoulder belts for the earlier A-bodies that did not have factory mounting points above the side windows?

I have the same question about where to mount the shoulder harness. My 66 chevelle only had the lap belts and is freshly painted so i would rather not do any welding obviously. What is suggested by Morris?

Does a 67 have the upper mounting points?

I think mid-year '66 and newer should have the roof anchors in place, so your 67 should have them.
