Default 88 S-15 4.3L slow start-any suggestions??

Have tried turning the key on and sitting for 10 seconds before cranking, no luck. Truck always cranks for about 10-15 seconds before it fires. 188K on the engine, seems to run good, just a little smoke @ 1st start up.

Any suggestions as to why it takes so long to start?

excessive carbon build-up? (assuming all the normal maintenance items, such as plug/filters, etc. are up to par)...Try some sea foam.

Has it always done it, or did it just start getting worse??

You might put a fuel pressure gauge on the Schrader tap on the fuel rail and see what the pressure is. Some of those Vortec V-6's needed like 56 PSI to run.

Put the gauge on it, turn the key on and see what the gauge does. The pump runs for 2-3 seconds to pressurize the system, and it's supposed to hold the pressure. Pumps start getting weak and not putting out enough initial pressure, or the check valve that is to hold the pressure goes bad and the pressure bleeds off until you crank it a bit and rebuild up the pressure.

Thats the first place to look.

Sid,
Do a google search on "4.3 Spider leak" and see what you find

This is my vote - I've had 4 of those engines, and they require a very high PSI for fuel, and if they're on the bottom of the range it will start to show as slow starts. Be prepared for the fuel pump to stop at some point - you may be able to restart after it cools down though.

Thanks for the responses guys!

This is my little 'beater' pickup. Think I've put 300 miles on it in 2 years, but since daughter's jeep died, she's been driving it around.

It's a throttle body injection system. Guess I'll start by doing a complete tuneup on it, not sure when previous owner has done that, I'll keep you posted if it continues.

Its an 88 so TBI with fuel pressure between 9-13 psi is normal. My 89 with 178k did the same thing and ran great.Brand new 1ga cables/battery and alt.Starter was replaced a few years earlier and thinking it was on its way out again but sold it.Still starts and runs fine just a little slow crank.

maybe check the fuel pressure relay? I know the camaros of that year apparently had a system that if the relay goes bad and you keep cranking it will eventually bypass the relay to get you home

that or weak fuel pump on it's way out would be my guess

aren't they supposed to crank for awhile ............ I mean how else is the rubber band going to get wound up

for a quick check ..... pull one of the hose's off on the intake a give it a quick squirt of starting fluid ..... if it lights right off .....your next check should be a compression check
