Default Do the engine code and partial vin stamp look fake?

I have a 67 SS chevelle and am looking at the numbers stamped on the front of the 396. I have heard that the Fremont plant numbers tend to look a little funny, so I'm not sure about this one. It almost looks like they tried to clarify some of the numbers that may have been decked off, but who knows. The 1's in 'IIEW' look like the letter 'I' to me and I'm not sure if the 'W' looks like a factory created 'W'. The rest of the numbers would match my VIN if they were all aligned. I'm giving up on thinking that its a numbers matching block, but would anyone disagree that its a correct motor for the car? What could I check to make sure that it was a motor that came with AC? I verified some of the intake and carb numbers and those seem to be legit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It almost looks like the Z was stamped over a 7 or T.

The number "1" was typically represented by the letter "I" on engine assembly plant stamps; McKinnon is the only one I can ever remember seeing using the numeral "1" on an engine date.

Until 1968 when it was a federal mandate to stamp partial VINs on car parts, there was no 'standard' method or font used and the characters were individually stamped - and often not too neatly and not too well.

GM standardized font size and type and most plants used a holder such as this to insure characters were readable and relatively neat.

All you can do is present the car to the best of your knowledge. One would need a very close inspection (or better eyes than I have) of the engine pad to see if the broach marks are there or not.

Air conditioning (AC ?) wouldn't have any effect on the engine itself. Engines don't come with AC, the car does. The EW code is for A.I.R. if that's what you mean. Aside from the A.I.R. components, the exhaust manifolds would be different than a non-A.I.R. car to accomodate the smog tubes themselves.

It looks good to me. Here is a picture of another 67 stamp.

Dale,
I thought that the A.I.R. portion of the engine combo meant that the car had Air Conditioning. Are you saying that A.I.R. is just defined to be be optional smog equipment? Thanks for educating me

Correct. A.I.R. stands for Air Injection Reactor or more commonly called smog equipment. Air conditioning is usually abbreviated as AC or A/C and not engine dependent.

{Edit} Not all A.I.R. applications were truly optional - many engines mandated the option.

By enhancing the picture I could see the pad better.
I saw nothing that would suggest the pad had been decked, broach marks are visible.
If the engine build of 11 May 67 does not conflict with car build date it is possibly the original engine.
Do you have casting number and casting date for the block?

I don't have the casting numbers at this time. I just got the car about 5 days ago The date code on the Cowl Tag is 05E. Are the engine and car build dates too close for comfort? Thanks, Wil

That looks like a typical May - June 1967 Fremont partial vin stamp. I have seen at least 7 or 8 Fremont stamps that look the same, with the funky Z and the last two digits way off to the side. See pic of another one below. I think you are good to go.

But be aware that no matter what I or anyone else tells you, there will be lots of folks that say it can't possibily be an original stamp because it is too messy. But they will be wrong!

I agree 100 percent with Kurt and Jeff. Looks good to me.

Anything 68 or later probably won't look like that, but could be that way 67 and earlier.

11 May 1967 was Thursday of week two.
05E is week five which started Monday 29 May so you have a at least 18 days and possibly longer than that.

So, no, I don't think that is too close.

Also, the "II" in the date is a common anomaly with the Tonawanda date stamps. They are more common in the months of October, November and December due to the dates starting T10, T11 and T12. Some dates required a lot of "1"s so therefore it's quite common to have an "I" or two in the dates.
