Default Roller cam button install ?

I've been asking everyone about this, can't even find anything online to help. This is in a 454 and how do you get the right distance from the button to the cover since you can't see anything inside the cover, this is the first time installing a roller. Which material is the best to use. I've been told that the buttons come in degrees to work with the timing, is this true? Any help with this would be great.

Thanks, Walt

Walt,

I see by searching that you have asked this same question 3 times on TC so far. Did you not read any of the other threads you have started?

Here is the search for ya. Just click this and you should find your answers.

Walt,

Get a nylon cam button, CompCams sells them. Local vendor for me is DELTA CAMSHAFT in Tacoma.
I did this just over a week ago, PITA. The nylon button is huge. Trial fit with gasket showed it was way long behind my Aluminum timing cover. I took an educated guess, cut the end off the button with a hacksaw, did a trial fit. Was pretty close but too large. I took the button out, put it in the vise (gently) and rounded the head like it came from the factory. Placed the button back in the engine, fit the cover, removed, filed...6-8 times...better part of one afternoon. Once the cover and gasket seated, I got the clay out... I ended up with .010"

I used clay. Mocked it up to get an estimate. Ground the button on the bench grinder til it was close, and fine-tuned it from there.

Thanks to all of you for the help, like I said I've been asking everyone but I was still confused. Kyle your link did not work but thanks for helping, George and Scott have the same idea that I have been trying but I wasn't sure if it was the right way. The clay is a good idea, I had plumbers putty around and tried it but it was a little sticky. What do you think about plasti-gage (not sure if spelling is right) on the end of the button?

Thanks again for all your help, I've been wanting to get the bottom end closed up.

I like Wolfie's idea but too late for me this time.

If you are doing it the dumb way like I suggested, Use your plumber's putty but put a bit of oil on your cam button...it will not stick to your putty
