Default Did any Chevelles come with a factory installed 327/365 HP engine?

I was reading a Muscle Car Review magazine from 2004 that made it sound like they did...but I don't think so.

I loved the 327/350 HP engine that was available.

This combination was supposedly built for the 1964 Chevelle but Chevrolet's Accumulative Production Report does not list the RPO as being sold in a Chevelle. It is possible there might have been a few built but not reported.

Code--JS
Year--64
CID--327
Vehicle--Chevelle
HP--365
RPO--L-76

Cam--Hp Solid

Nope. 350 HP was the top of the line for SB engines in Chevelles in ANY year. In point fo fact the L-79 was offered as a 350HP motor in 1965...disappeared TOTALLY in 1966 and returned in 1967 rated at 325 in the Chevelle. It remained avail in Vettes as a 350HP engine in every year it was offered. 1965 thru 1967??? In 68 the Vettes had the 350 HP 350 Ci motor but I think the 327 continued in the Chevelle thur 1968

There are rumors that there were some factory test cars in 1964 with the 327 /365. I dismiss most of that stuff as wishful thinking but perhaps there were one or two cars. The average stiff could not get one that I am sure of.

I do recall an article in some car mag many years ago about such a 1964 car. If I recall it was red in color and it was claimed to be a factory "mule" 327 / 365.

All that differed, as you likely know was the cam and lifters when you went from 350Hp to 365 and the cam swap was really an easy thing to do. I knew one guy who did such a swap on a 67 Chevelle. I always thought the car was a better "streeter" with the hydraulic cam. Just my opinion.

This hobby has gotten so nutty in the quest for "Ultra Rare Cars" that now when someone finds a solid lifter Chevelle SB they immediately conclude it MUST be some one-of -a-kind factory test car OR something ordered by some GM executive for his kid or some other fairy tale. Next thing ya know people are crawling out from under the floor boards with stories about their cousin that had one balh blah blah!!!!

The L-79 was IMHO one of the nicest combos GM ever made. I had several friends who had those cars. One guy I knew had an L79 66 Nova. Aside from the terrible front suspension that car was just super. I purchased an L-79 in a crate in June 1967 and ran that car over 50K miles. It was just the best. I suppose that time makes ya remember the good stuff and forget the bad stuff but for a kid just outta HS that was a great ride after the junk I drove beofre it.

Actually, I should have been more specific, the 2004 Muscle Car Review article was a reprint of a 1964 HRM test of a 300 HP 327 El Camino. They said the El Camino came with a 327/365 but was changed, (by GM, it was a factory test vehicle), to a 327/300 HP which was a better balance in the El Camino with it's light rear end. As I remember it, the 250 and 300 HP 327's were available in 64, the 327/350 not until 65.

I had a 67 Corvette with the 327/300 HP engine....always wanted the 327/350 but never had one.

I remember seeing 327/375 hp on the air cleaner of a '67 Impala back in the early 70's.

An old Chevelle Report (the NCOA monthly magazine) had a reprint of the bulletin announcing the 327/365 for Chevelles, but I understand that it was cancelled before production. The engine in the article was a dead ringer for a 1965 L-79, right down to the dual snorkel air cleaner. It did not have any chrome on the engine however. The 12-bolt had not yet been released in '64 either.

The L-79 was offered on 1965-68 Chevelles (1966 is a question mark), 1966-68 Chevy II & Nova (including just six in 1967), plus mid-65 through 1968 Corvettes (replaced with the 350/350 L-46 for 1969/70 Corvettes & overshadowed by the LT-1 in 1970).

327/375 was a fuel inj corvette only engine, i bought one with front end damage back in the day for $2K
as said, the chevelle had the 327/350-i cant remember if it had the 2.5 exhaust or not
the 327/300 was used in some models, later changed to 327/275
the 327/350 was used in some novas, one of the fastest models back then, i had one i raced for a while
now we did swap in some 327/365 cams in them, tighten up the valve springs a little-they really resp. to some head work

No L-79 in 66. Not offered. Some say, but who really knows, it was not offered because the 325 396 was introduced in 66. "Only the General Knows" for sure why it was not offered.

I think all the l79 engines delivered in Chevelles used 2 inch manifolds. Chevy never made a log manifold that has a 2.5 inch outlet. Even the 1970 LT1 Corvette had a 2 inch outlet that connected to a pipe that "opened up" to 2.5 inches. The pipe from the engine back to the muffler was "opened up" to 2.5 inch dia a few inches rearward of the mainifold on the Chevelle even in 1965. In the Corvette they had different manifolds depending on the year. I bought my crate L-79 "dressed" as a Corvette L-79 for a 67 Corvette. it came with 2 inch Rams Horn manifolds installed. Earlier C2 Corvettes with rams horn manifolds were 2.5 up until I think 65

The L-79 was offered in the '67 Chevelles but G.M. changed the rated horsepower down to 325 h.p. It is the same engine that was in the '66 novas, rated at 350 h.p. I once saw a 365 h.p. solid lifter 327 in a '63 Impala which ran real good. Most of the (325 h.p.- 396s) wouldn't get out of their own way.

That is EXACTLY correct. Except for BB engines, there were NEVER any 2 1/2in exhaust manifolds except for the 62-65 2 1/2in Ram horn versions (ONLY in Vettes and full size cars).
To this day, I will never understand why Chevy didn't have any 2 1/2in manifolds after 65. And before anyone asks, you CANNOT put a 2 1/2in manifold on a SB in a Chevelle.
