Default What is the best Clear you have ever shot?

Just wondering what clear you guys like best.

I would have to say that in my limited experience the PPG clears were OK but they would get spider web micro scratches 3 months down the "road"

I have shot UC-35 and love the way it sands and buffs and it stays nice without spider web scratches, for years.

I am so impressed with the SPI primers that I am now using, that I am tempted to try their 4000 High Solids clear though, anybody ever used SPI clear?

Anybody have a favorite OTHER clear?

I shoot PPG exclusively and have since 1980. The Clear I use the most for High build Custom work is DCU 2042 with DCX61 hardner. The product can be spot repaired and blended years later for invisible repairs. The Customer really appreciates that.

Thumbs up Re: What is the best Clear you have ever shot?

STANDOX -spies hecker is the best I'VE SHOT,.Used ppg, Dupont, Sikkens. and Glasurit. You get used to one product and know it like the back of your hand, so.... whattever you are comfortable with is the best for you.

That there is a very true statement. I only shoot clear a few times a year as a hobbyist and I always get GPS no matter how good a product I have found

I am just a hobbyist, painted my race car a couple times with SS, also painted the Chevelle last October. Used SPI Universal clear and the car came out absolutely great! SPI's customer support is second to none. As a hobbiest, I had a number of questions which Barry was alwasys happy to answer.

That's a good call, SPI's universal is a fantastic clear. Make sure you use Barry for info, he loves to help. I gotta say though, you can't pick a clear by looking at a few pics.

Spies and Glasurit make some really nice clears, some of the best out there but pricey.
Was a big PPG fan, liked the 2062.
Now I use SPI Ive only sprayed the universal clear, its a great product much better then any PPG or Dupont clear Ive sprayed.

A few SPI universal on my Dodge truck

I do a bikes now primarily. Does SPI kick fast and is it buffable the next day? Is it nice and hard 24 hrs later or can you stick you nail in it? This is important for these jobs. I just tried Transtar's Euro Clear and it has these properties. I've shot many clears in the past 20 years but not all. If SPI does I will try it for certain jobs. Other customers don't mind spending $300 per sprayable gallon. I am interested in this statement by Clean Cut Creations and will try it at some point. Crazy Canuck inquired about it too and I value his opinion. I need a good performing product for my jobs.

"We use Valspar/Debeer basecoat clearcoat. I really am in love with this product line and WAS a diehard Sikkens advocate for almost 20+ years. We have been spraying Debeer for almost 1.5 years now. The quality of the basecoat and holdout of the clear is unbelievable and don't get me started on the cost savings!"

"Sikkens HS+ has to be by far the clearest, best looking clear right off of the gun that I have ever sprayed. Sikkens HS+ clear is over $300.00/ sprayable gallon. The debeer HS product is less expensive than that at near 200.00/ gal RTS. The debeer HS clear is not all that crystal clear but still a great product with no solvent popping issues."

Does anybody else use these?

Scott,
Yes the universal is hard and buffable the next day. A good friend of mine, who I turned into a SPI user sprays custom jobs out of his garage. He air drys all his jobs with only a make shift booth and can start to buff the next morning if need be.

Universal is a very clean clear clearcoat with excellent gloss holdout. Is it as good as the top notch products like Spies and Glasurit, no but it surely out performs any PPG, Dupont, S-W product Ive sprayed hands down.

SPI epoxy and urethane primers are some of the best out there IMO.

Here is the SPI forum with some very knowledge SPI users who spray it everyday.
Give it try, I doubt you will be disappointed with any SPI product...Eric

Thanks Eric. I'll give it a lash. If it has as good of hang time as the Transtar Euro Clear I'll be happy. Frame painting is not like painting a car and is more demanding in it's own way.

I've shot the universal SPI a few times and I would compare it straight across to ppg 2002 HS. Scott, I'd be interested in your opinion on this clear. It's cheap, $100 per sprayable gal., and buffs very well the next day and pretty well in 6 months. On other forums it's got an almost cult following so it would be refreshing to hear a pro's opinion who's never tried it.
