Hi Team Chevelle I have been browsing the forum for a while now as I had plans on getting a Chevelle. Well now the time has come and I have a recently purchased a 72 that I plan on taking my time with and doing a frame off. But to begin I cannot remove the Fender I have all the bolts removed but it is still held on by the headlight extension. Can someone please explain how to get the headlight extension off to get to the last bolts. Pictures would be appreciated. This is my first restoration project.
ThanksAnd I have used the search and found threads on this topic but it hasn't helped me.

Not know your 72 I would suggest you get an assembly manual. It will pay for it's self very fast.

Take off the front bumper and remove the extension, the fender bolts to it. Take the unit out as an assembly with the headlight and all, don't forget to unplug the marker light on the side, be careful, the plug will tear.

I dont have pictures, but on my 72 elco extension, there is one hiding behind the bumper on the bottom grille side, one when you open the hood that goes onto the radiator support, and 2 screw like things that go in from inside the fender.
Maybe you can tell us which ones you found already? Matt

And I removed all fender bolts except the ones at the extension. And now I just cant get the extensions off. So the bumper has to come off first? |

I purchased my manual from Ausley's chevelle parts. If you don't have any parts catalogs yet nows the time to get some. That way you know whats available for your car. Some parts are hard to come buy and taking your time to get things off carefully can save you in the end form trying to find that part.As far as the the fender ext. removal there are two nuts you have to remove from the engine compartment.Battery has to come out if there is one there. Also two bolts one at the top on radiator support and one behind the bumper pull the plugs on lights and its out.

On the grille side of the extension there is a bolt onto the core support at the top, and one at the bottom holding it on. The there are 2 7/16ths nuts that hold onto it from the core support side on the fender side, they are almost vertical. You should be able to find them just look for the studs.

4 bolts and the bumper is off, you will be glad you took it off when working on the fender and extension. Be careful of paint in the fender/extension joint especially if you are not doing paintwork, it could crack on removal
Take a picture of everything as you take it apart, what you ar doing is not hard but you need to put it back on right when you are done. Pictures are great for this.

Thank you all I got the first fender off but now the passenger fender is almost there but I have a stripped bolt under the door hinge. It turns and turns but wont come out. and the one in the front on the radiator support has a stripped head. How do I remove these?

So the bolt below the hinge is at the bottom of the fender right? They rust up and are held in there by a fender nut/clip. My guess is that it is the back one you cant get to easily. The good news is that if you can wiggle the base of the fender out the fender should pop free. You may have to work it out. If it will not budge try your best to get back there to the nut, you only need it to come loose just a little.
The one in the radiator support probably was a welded in nut that broke. If you can get some vice grips on it it may break free. (is the one giving you trouble behind the battery?) Try some PB Blaster on the frozen parts, it works wonders. We have all been there with these things and you are experiencing nothing unusual with your car, hang in there, it will come off.
